Recently erupted on Twitter a discussion, which revolved around the obviously unrealistic portrayal of a shy girl’s hairstyle in anime and manga. The whole thing was rounded off with a sketch, which you can find translated by us at the end of the article.
Bind at what point?
There’s a common stereotype in anime and manga of a shy girl who doesn’t want to stand out from the crowd and therefore doesn’t really care about looking fashionable. This type of girl is often portrayed with a ponytail because for artists, having her hair tied back is a visual stylistic device of a reserved personality.
The hobby artist @sateyo published a small skit on Twitter in which she claimed that while the principle is correct, the portrayal in anime and manga is wrong. She particularly focuses on the part where a shy girl ties her hair.
The girls in manga and anime would always tie their hair in a ponytail at the highest point, i.e. right at the back of the head. However, according to her skit, in reality a shy girl would tie her hair at the lowest possible point. She stressed that this was her opinion and the result of personal observation. But she would do the same herself.
Nonetheless, she received a lot of encouragement in the comments:
- “I absolutely agree!”
- »Big hit. It takes so much effort to tie a high ponytail.«
- »A high ponytail feels like styling. A deep one is just tying it up.”
- “The higher the ponytail, the more tension. It’s less convenient.”
- “I can’t bring myself to tie a nice high ponytail.”
