Exceptional in the role of Roman Roy, Kieran Culkin nevertheless failed to play a completely different character in the series “Succession”. Explanations.
It’s hard to imagine an actor other than Kieran Culkin to play Roman Roy, the unbearable youngest of the family at the heart of the series Succession. And yet! Guest of the Tonight Show this week, the 39-year-old actor said he originally auditioned for the role of… Greg, the somewhat stupid cousin finally played by Nicholas Braun!
A glaring casting error, also felt by Kieran Culkin when reading the script: “They asked me to audition for the part of Greg. I knew it wouldn’t be okay. Normally, for any other show I would have thought that the role is not for me, and that it would be better to stop there, but I really liked the script very much. “
Another role had particularly caught his attention: that of Roman Roy. Cynical, rude, cowardly, the latter has all the paraphernalia of the character that we love to hate. Only, Kieran Culkin had to be bold to convince the casting director. Auditions for Roman had not yet started at the time, the actor nevertheless decided to record despite an audition for the role.
A risk-taking that finally paid off, and no need to say that the end result gave him ample reason to have tried his luck. Rewarded last year by the Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor, Kieran Culkin simply delivered a perfect performance, proving that no other actor than him would have been able to give the character this dimension both detestable and pathetic.
Recall that the episodes of Succession season 3 are available every Monday in US + 24 on OCS City!
