CRITICAL / FILM OPINION – After a first massacre game in 2019, the Minos company continues its diabolical plan in “Escape Game 2: The world is a trap”. A sequel that deserves the trip?
Escape Game 2 : only the best survive
In 2019, six candidates find themselves at the heart of the immense trap thought by the obscure company Minos in Escape Game. The company’s goal: to study human behavior and the instinct for survival by subjecting a lucky handful to deadly challenges. At the end of this series B signed Adam Robitel (The Strange Case of Deborah Logan, Insidious: The Last Key), the survivors promised to lift the veil around the actions of this disturbing structure based in Manhattan.
This is how begins Escape Game 2: The world is a trap, still directed by Adam Robitel. Suffering from post-traumatic stress from the ordeals in which they were involved, Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) hit the road for New York. Barely arrived, they are propelled to another part. This time, Minos did not bring together candidates who have all experienced a tragedy. For this second round, all the winners of the previous challenges have been gathered. In this new kinky game, who will be the best of the best?
Efficiency above all
After a brief review of the facts and a quick set-up, the characters must overcome a test that sets the tone. While the first part left a moment of reflection to the participants of the escape game, at least in the initial stages, the urgency sets in here from the outset.
The players know the rules, the spectators too. The lack of time and the fatal outcome therefore become more important than the mystery and logic behind the puzzles. From sound effects to editing through the more numerous traps, Escape Game 2 favors efficiency to the detriment of suspense. The development of newcomers is also taking a back seat.
While the tension gradually mounted in the first opus, it is omnipresent in this sequel. An approach giving rise to scenes that are certainly more nervous, but which encourage less the public to find solutions on their side, which made the charm of the previous film. Nevertheless, the care given to the decorations and secrets of the different rooms, as well as the fate reserved for certain characters allow an engaging immersion, where the pace never slackens.
The extension of a universe
Rather than sending new protagonists to suffer the cruelty of their torturers in the manner of Cube²: Hypercube, Escape Game 2 therefore play the card of the direct sequence centered on the same characters. And like the French subtitle un brin trompeur (the original Tournament of Champions is definitely more suited) suggests, Zoey and Ben aren’t supposed to be able to escape Minos.
In its expeditious conclusion, the feature film skilfully returns to the end of the first episode and evokes this notion of permanent paranoia. The last minutes when the immense Machiavellian plan of society continues to take shape. The company finally seems capable of everything, as was the Consumer Recreation Services in The Game. The idea is promising but Adam Robitel is content to fly over it, just like the violence of the massacre which has been carried out wisely shown. However, everything suggests that a third component could fully exploit it.
