Between two weeks of free games on the Epic Games Store, the new master of the video game world does not forget to feed the indestructible Fortnite with ever more content.
While we are still trying to figure out which 21st century license has not found its place in Epic Games’ colorful Battle Royale, diversification at all costs seems more than ever to guide Fortnite’s long-term maintenance strategy. While rumors evoked the start of a feature film last month, Epic Games today announces the acquisition of the Harmonix studio: the former parents of the Guitar Hero or Rock Band series will have to participate in the war effort collective, and focus on the musical dimension of Fortnite.
Message in a Bottle
Dns the press release unveiled for the occasion, Epic Games says it is “delighted” to have been able to grab “one of the main independent game development studios in the world”. With two decades of experience (and successes) in the rhythm game genre, Harmonix is therefore asked to put its know-how at the service of the most famous Battle Royale in the industry:
As we work to build the metaverse, Harmonix expertise is needed to reimagine how music will be experienced, created and distributed. The Harmonix team will work closely with Epic Games to develop musical adventures for Fortnite while continuing to support existing titles including Rock Band 4.
You Really Got Me
For its part, the studio confirms the statements of its new employer, reassuring budding guitarists: the DLC already planned to feed the discotheque of the latest Rock Band to date are still in the boxes, and the year 2022 should also offer its share of new tracks, just like the events offered in Fuser.
The Boston studio retains the mystery around the musical content that should make its entry into Fortnite for now, but given the plethora of artists who have already been able to perform there in one way or another. Alain Tascan, vice president in charge of development at Epic Games, is as confident as he is vague:
Music already brings millions of people together on Fortnite, from our emoticons to the concerts and events we host. Together with the Harmonix team, we’ll transform the way players experience music, from passive listeners to active participants.
