Epic: a free app transforms your surroundings into 3D

If it was the kind of tool that was only in the hands of Epic, it’s now possible to have it for everyone: RealityScan, an amazing tool that allows you to scan what’s around you with your phone to transform it in 3D model.

Epic presents RealityScan

Since an image is worth a thousand months, we advise you to watch the video above which allows you to admire the use of the RealityScan application. To put it simply, it scans a real object in your environment to make a 3D model that can be used in a video game or any creative project. To do this, all you have to do is photograph the object from every angle. Then Epic’s RealityScan application is able to export the model to Sketchfab, a well-known site for developers that allows hosting and playback of 3D files.

At the moment, the software is only available on iOS and this completely free of charge (the icing on the cake). An Android version is planned for next year.

Epic states on its website:

RealityScan is a 3D scanning app for mobile devices that turns photos into high-fidelity 3D models. The app was designed to be very easy to use, so no experience is required to get started.

Simply take photos of the object you want to 3D render using your smartphone or tablet, and the app will stitch them together into a 3D model. Once you’re happy with the results, you can export to Sketchfab and share your creation with the world.
