Sam Mendes’ next film, “Empire of Light”, expected on March 1, 2023, has just been revealed in a superb new trailer. Touching images that promise an exciting human adventure.
Empire of Light : big casting for the new Mendes
For his ninth feature, Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Skyfall, 1917) surrounded himself with an impressive cast. Indeed, for his new film, titled Empire of Lightit brings together a four-star cast, notably led by Colin Firth, Olivia Colman, Toby Jones or even Michael Ward.
While Steven Spielberg will tell his childhood through the prism of cinema very soon in The FabelmansSam Mendes also decided to put the seventh art at the center of his new feature film. Empire of Light will tell an impossible love story set in and around a beautiful little cinema on the south coast of England.
A great trailer
The fabulous Olivia Colman (The Father, The Favorite) is back with a major melodramatic role. Here, she plays Hilary, a woman who will find joy and love again thanks to young Stephen, a young African-American man played by Michael Ward. Their budding love will take place in the red seats of a small cinema run by the character of Toby Jones. Sam Mendes seems to be getting into here an ode to cinema, to love, in an atmosphere that can quickly turn tragic and dramatic. A genre that he has already experimented with in the past with The Rebel Weddings (2009).
This new trailer for Empire of Light distills a magical atmosphere which should pay homage to the power of the seventh art. In addition to pervasive emotion, this trailer also offers a striking visual approach, with stunningly beautiful shots. An aesthetic power which is not insignificant since it is Roger Deakins who takes care of the photography from the new Sam Mendes film.
The latter is a famous cinematographer who has worked with the greatest. He is notably credited with the image of blade runner 2049 by Denis Villeneuve, Dunkirk of Christopher Nolan or of The village by M.Night Shyamalan. It also already worked in the past with Sam Mendes on Jarhead, The Rebel Weddings, Sky Fall and his recent 1917.
Empire of Light is expected on March 1, 2023 in French cinemas.
