Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt form an indestructible duo in “Edge of Tomorrow”, both a war film and a science fiction thriller, released in theaters in 2014. And her shoot was very special for the actress, which could have caused a serious accident.
Edge of Tomorrow a multi-genre film
Edge of Tomorrow adapts the short story for young adults by Japanese writer Hiroshi Sakurazaka All You Need Is Kill. A time loop story in a Europe devastated by an alien invasion. Destructive “mimics” and as if endowed with a prescience, which prevents humans from resisting. Until the day when Cage (Tom Cruise), a soldier in charge of public relations, finds himself sent into combat for the first time in his life. There he is killed for the first time, before starting the same day again, to be killed again, advancing each day a little more. A strange phenomenon, also affected the so-called “Angel of Verdun” (Emily Blunt). Together, they will do everything to get to the end of this phenomenon and defeat the “mimics”.
With this astonishing scenario, Doug Liman directs a film that allows itself passages of pure comedy, sends impressive war action scenes and has fun with some codes of the horror genre. We retain Edge of Tomorrow as a very satisfying show, precisely because it borrows ideas from all directions, and because Tom Cruise has a new role in it, that of a cowardly character who dies repeatedly which is not common in the filmography of the superstar.
Its shooting was not the easiest, and Emily Blunt, who was working for the first time with Tom Cruise, did not have only easy days. There was the armor to wear, weighing several tens of kilos, there was also her pregnancy which prevented her from performing certain stunts herself during reshoots, and above all, there was an accident in a vehicle which could have ended very badly…
Emily Blunt: ‘Like I know more about stunts than Tom Cruise…’
Edge of Tomorrowlike any good self-respecting action movie has its chase scene. In it, Cage and Rita are isolated in enemy territory and flee in a car – a rare appearance of a Renault Espace 4 in the cinema, and which tows a caravan to make things easier -. Captivating and funny, this sequence where Emily Blunt drives and Tom Cruise gets rid of a “mimic”, caused a nice scare during filming. Emily Blunt told it during an interview with Conan O’Brien in June 2014.
I was fully into my character and Tom was behind me, very calm. I hear him mutter as I approach the bend “brake, brake, brake. Brake. Brake, brake, brake… Oh my god. Brake, brake, brake. Brake hard! Brake hard!”
I braked too late, and we ended up in a tree… I almost killed Tom Cruise.
Emily Blunt, who was instructed to go “a little faster” for this second take, admits she ignored her partner’s “annoying” recommendation. She continues her mea culpa with humor.
When I heard the first “brake”, I thought “Ah shut up”. As if I knew more about car stunts than Tom Cruise. I mean, he obviously doesn’t know anything about it. I control.
She then explains that they weren’t hurt and were able to laugh together about the accident and that she apologized to her partner for not taking his advice. A mishap that fortunately caused more fear than harm!
