The novel Eat Pray Love is based on the true story lived by Elizabeth Gilbert. It became a true best-seller with ten million copies sold. She has since released six other books, and is about to unveil a seventh. But on the side of his private life, things have been rather hectic.
What becomes of the real Elizabeth Gilbert?
So after having lived for years with José Nunes, the man she had met in Bali (Felipe in the film), her love life took a completely different path in 2016. Indeed, she had declared in a long message posted on Facebook fell in love with her best friend, the artist Rayya Elias. The two women had been very close for 15 years, and it was after discovering that Rayya Elias had cancer that her feelings took over. She explained thus:
The moment I learned of Rayya’s diagnosis, a window opened deep in my heart (which I didn’t know was there) and my whole existence passed directly through it. From that moment, everything became HER. I undid everything that could be undone in my life, and went straight to his side, where I have been ever since (…) Death – or the prospect of death – has a way of cleaning up everything that is not real, and in this space of stark and total reality, I was confronted with this truth: I do not simply like Rayya; I’m in love with Rayya.
Sadly, Rayya Elias passed away from liver and pancreatic cancer in 2018, a year after marrying Elizabeth Gilbert. In 2020, she had written him a poem, posted on his Instagram account:
In 2019, Elizabeth Gilbert announced that she was in a relationship with photographer Simon MacArthur, who himself happens to be a long friend of Rayya Elias.
