Dune won six of the 10 categories for which it was nominated.
Denis Villeneuve’s Dune was the film that left the 94th Academy Awards with the most awards. Dune won the award in six of the 10 categories for which it was nominated.
Hans Zimmer, who composed the music for the film, won his second Oscar in the Best Original Soundtrack category, while cinematographer Greig Fraser, editor Joe Walker, and production designer Patrice Vermette won their first Oscars.
Dune also took home Oscars for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects, as well as Best Original Soundtrack, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Production Design. Due to the Academy’s decision not to present the eight award categories live, which was implemented for the first time this year, we were only able to watch the accepting moments of Greig Fraser and the film’s visual effects team Paul Lambert, Tristan Myles, Brian Connor, and Gerd Nefzer live on air. The moments when the winners of the other categories received their awards were broadcast as short clips during the ceremony.
Dune’s nominated Oscar winner in the Best Costume Design category was Jenny Beavan for Cruella, Stephanie Ingram, Linda Dowds, and Justin Raleigh for The Eyes of Tammy Faye in the Best Hair and Makeup category. Dune lost Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture Oscars to Sian Heder’s CODA.
The director of Dune, Dennis Villeneuve, which was nominated for an Oscar in 10 categories in total, was not nominated in the Best Director category, which drew a great reaction. Jane Campion received the award in this category with The Power of the Dog. The Power of the Dog, which was nominated in a total of 12 categories, left the night with only this award.
