We already knew that “Dune 2” will arrive next year in cinemas, we now know that the plans of Warner and Denis Villeneuve go further. Indeed, John Spaihts, screenwriter of “Dune” and its sequel, has strongly suggested that a third film could well see the light of day.
Dune a whole universe in development
Much like Warner’s plans to develop the new open-world “THE BATMAN” the universe of Dune should go far beyond the sequel announced for October 2023. Indeed, in an interview with The Playlist the screenwriter of the first film John Spaihts, who co-wrote it with Eric Roth and Denis Villeneuve, gave valuable information about what the future holds.
As a reminder, there is the novel Dune by Frank Herbert, published in 1965, and of which Denis Villeneuve’s film is the adaptation of the first part, but above all, there is a cycle of Dune. This includes six novels, including the second and third, Dune’s Messiah, and Children of Dune thus seem to have all the attention of Warner studios.
A very likely third film
In Dune, we discover Paul Atréides (Timothée Chalamet), his mother Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), and their encounter with the Fremen. And particularly with Chani (Zendaya), a young girl whom Paul has seen several times in his visions. In the rest of the story and therefore the next film, Paul and Chani are going to unite and together wage war against the Harkonnen and the Emperor’s forces. A story that should not stop there, as John Spaihts suggests.
I am currently working on “Dune 2”, but not only, also on other projects for the cinema, which are much talked about. But I’m not allowed to say much more. It’s a very rich world to play in, and I think it presents plenty of opportunities for new stories, in many directions.
Without being able to say more, the screenwriter will nevertheless go further. It thus bounces on a statement by Denis Villeneuve in the fall of 2021, where the filmmaker himself mentioned his interest in a third film. Dune.
Denis seriously mentioned “The Messiah of Dune”, which could be the conclusion of a trilogy. “The Messiah of Dune” is a very interesting novel, which somehow deconstructs “Dune” and is an even stronger moral fable than “Dune”, about the dangers of mixing religion and politics, the risks of following charismatic leaders, and the dangerous and eternal struggle between individuals and institutions. (…)
I think so, there are seductive leaps to the future that suggest we’re not done with this universe. Even if the end of the Dune novel, which will also be the end of the second film, is a very satisfying conclusion.
An HBO Max series project is also in development
One can take John Spaihts very seriously. Indeed, the screenwriter was initially to be the showrunner of the series Dune: The Sisterhood, but he had to detach himself from it precisely focus on projects Dune At the movie theater.
With filming planned for this summer for Dune 2and Denis Villeneuve having indicated that his scenario was almost finished, it is, therefore, a safe bet that at this moment John Spaihts is already working on the design of a third film, based on Dune’s Messiah. Before, perhaps tackling the adaptation of the sequel, Children of Dune, which focuses on the twins of Paul and Chani? As she said at the end of Dune: “This is only the beginning…”
