“Dune” is one of the most anticipated films of the end of 2021. This new adaptation of the cult work of SF literature is just the starting point of something bigger. Its director, Denis Villeneuve, talks about the second part and gives the first indications.
Dune arrives in September on screens
For various reasons, the adaptation of Dune by David Lynch was below expectations. So much so that the director denies the film in his career. The basic material is actually an absolutely magnificent resource which can lead to a great cinematographic work. It is still necessary to have the means and the freedoms to do it justice. Denis Villeneuve seems to have had both for his Dune who is expected on September 15th in French theaters. Before that, he will have an exceptional preview at the Deauville Festival.
The Canadian director, to whom we owe Blade Runner 2049 Where Sicario, surrounded himself witha very prestigious distribution : Thimothée Chalamet, Oscar Isaac, Rebecca Ferguson, Javier Bardem, Zendaya, Josh brolin, Charlotte Rampling, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa. A stack of so many beautiful names is a great marketing argument for a film that is not guaranteed to be a box office hit. Even less in this very strange context, where the pandemic is not over and the rooms are still disabled. Let us add thata release on HBO Max remains on the agenda in the United States, thus making the download threat heavier.
Denis Villeneuve has wanted from the start to a story that fits on two films. He knows that at least that is needed to properly develop the universe and the different narrative lines. In this first part, we will meet Paul Atréides, son of Duke Leto. When the latter is betrayed by Emperor Shaddam IV, our hero flees into the sandy immensity of the planet Arrakis. He meets the people of the Fremen and will understand that a great destiny awaits him. On the condition that he accepts to become the savior of a planet coveted for his Spice, a precious resource with extraordinary properties. This is the starting point. It remains to be seen at what point the scenario of Dune will stop to understand what the sequel will tell.
An inevitable sequel?
For now, Dune 2 has yet to be officially announced. The results of the former will be observed before a decision is made. At the microphone of Total Film, the director expresses his optimism as to the feasibility of this sequel.
They think it would take a really bad box office score to not have Dune: Part 2, because they love the movie.
In addition, we can think from the beginning that the sequel has enormous chances of being done, especially since the studio was aware of Denis Villeneuve’s plans. Still in the same interview, the main concerned admits that he has already started writing the screenplay, proof that optimism reigns:
I am writing, and I feel like an eight year old.
A change of main character to be expected
In an interview for the Italian magazine Il Venerdì di Repubblica (via DuneInfo), it reveals a little more about the turn taken by the script by specifying that Chani, the character played by Zendaya, was to become the heroine. In the first, it is Thimothée Chalamet in Paul Atréides who will be the center of attention. The two characters will get closer after their meeting and become love interests. We will get to know them on September 15, as well as the rest of the huge gallery of characters. If only two films are mentioned for the moment, do not exclude the hypothesis that an entire saga can be developed.
