The BBC has just confirmed that season 13 of “Doctor Who” will be the last in which Jodie Whittaker, who took over the role of the iconic Time Lord in 2017, will appear. Showrunner Chris Chibnall will also be saying goodbye .
After many rumors, the BBC has just announced the dreaded news: Jodie Whittaker and Chris Chibnall, showrunner of the series, are going to say goodbye to Doctor Who.
The duo, who had been at the helm of the Tardis since 2017, will therefore be leaving the most iconic sci-fi series on the small screen by next year. But before they leave, they’ll be giving fans a thirteenth round of episodes as well as 3 special episodes in 2022, the last of which marks the end of the Thirteenth Doctor.
In 2017, Jodie Whittaker created a stir by becoming the first woman to play the Lord of Time. His departure, which has long been the subject of speculation, is in line with his predecessors, most of the actors having indeed left the series after 3 seasons.
The “three season rule” was thus respected by Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi. Even David Tennant has only had three seasons under his belt, although his tenure has technically been extended by his numerous appearances in special episodes. Chris Chibnall, for his part, replaced Steven Moffat at the helm of Doctor Who for the past four years.
“My heart is so filled with love for this show, for the team working on it, for the fans watching it and for what it has given me.“said Jodie Whittaker.” JI can’t thank Chris enough for trusting me with his amazing stories. We knew we wanted to ride this wave side by side, and pass the baton together. So here we are, weeks away from the end of the best job I’ve ever had.“
The showrunner, who is heading for the release alongside producer Matt Strevens, added: “Jodie and I made a pact at the beginning of this unique experience: “three seasons and it’s over”. Our work is now over and we are handing over the keys to the Tardis. Jodie’s interpretation of this iconic Doctor has exceeded all of our expectations. “
The first of the 2022 specials will air on New Years Day, followed by a second episode in the spring. Whittaker’s final appearance as the Time Lord will air in the fall of 2022, marking the BBC’s centenary.
Regarding the succession of Jodie Whittaker, no name has yet been communicated. One thing is certain, it won’t be It’s A Sin star Olly Alexander who denied rumors last June of him as the next Doctor. The bets remain open …
