As “Doctor Who” prepares to celebrate its 60th anniversary, the BBC has just announced that Russell T. Davies, who helped make the series cult, will make his comeback at the helm of season 14, which will arrive in 2023.
Russell T Davies, who helped revive Doctor Who in 2005, is set to make his comeback in the BBC’s cult sci-fi series.
The channel has just revealed that the famous multi-award-winning creator at the origin of series such as Queer as Folk, Years and Years and It’s a Sin, will succeed Chris Chibnall, outgoing showrunner who will bid farewell to the TARDIS in 2022 alongside of the current Master of Time, Jodie Whittaker.
Russell T Davis, who left the series in 2009, will therefore take over the reins in 2023, just in time to celebrate the famous Doctor’s 60th birthday. “I’m more than excited to find my favorite series“, did he declare.
“But let’s not travel too fast through time, I still have an entire season to discover with the brilliant Jodie Whittaker as The Doctor and my friend and hero Chris Chibnall at the helm – for now, I’m just a viewer.”
Chris Chibnall, the current Doctor Who showrunner, called the comeback “monumentally exciting“.”Russell built the stick that is about to be handed to him – Doctor Who, the BBC, the Wales TV industry, and let’s be honest, the whole world has plenty of reasons to be very excited about what awaits us“, revealed Chibnall.
“TOAs the 13th Doctor prepares to embark on new and extraordinary adventures, the winds of change are blowing … bringing with it new things that will delight Doctor Who fans around the world“, added Piers Wenger, BBC drama director.
“We are delighted that Russell is returning to Doctor Who to continue the immense successes of Chris and Jodie. Thanks to both of them and the Cardiff team for everything they continue to do for the series and hello Russell, it’s wonderful to have you back.“
As a reminder, the first of the 2022 special episodes will air on New Year’s Day, and will be followed by a second episode in the spring. Doctor Who season 13 will be broadcast in the fall of 2022, on the occasion of the BBC’s centenary.
