A look back at 10 legends of French dubbing who lent their mythical voices to multiple characters from Disney studios.
You might not know their names, but their legendary voices probably rocked your childhood if you grew up with Disney and Pixar productions. Return on the characters vocally interpreted by Richard Darbois, Maïk Darah, Claude Bertrand or even Paule Emanuele for the films of the enchanted studio.
Roger Carel, alias the “maestro” (since he also lent him his voice in the animated series Once upon a time … life), vocally embodied such diverse characters from C-3PO in Star Wars, Alf, Kermit the Frog or even Asterix. A true vocal chameleon from Disney studios, he has been Jiminy Criquet in Pinocchio (during the dubbing in 1975), Sheshire’s Cat in Alice in Wonderland, Pongo in 101 Dalmatians, Kaa in The Jungle Book, Winnie the Pooh, Coco Rabbit, Piglet and Basil, private investigator.
Interpreter of Gargamel in The Smurfs, of Satanas in Les Fous du Volant or of Alec Guinness in Star wars, Philippe Dumat, icon of French dubbing whose voice has often rocked our childhood, is also hiding behind many Disney characters. Among other things, he played Prince Jean, as funny as he is wicked in Robin Hood, the stupid Snoops, right arm of Medusa in The Adventures of Bernard and Bianca, Doctor Dawson, companion of adventures of Basil, private investigator, and of course the legendary Picsou in many films and series.
An exceptional actress with an often tender and maternal voice, Paule Emanuele has vocally embodied many Disney characters. She notably interpreted the terrible Queen of Hearts in Alice in Wonderland, the ruthless Aunt Sarah in Beauty and the Tramp, the benevolent fairy Flora in Sleeping Beauty and the charitable owl Big Mama in Rox and Rouky.
Actress Claude Chantal, who has also played characters as diverse as Krilin in Dragon Ball, Caroline in The Little House on the Prairie or Maggie Smith in the Harry Potter saga, has often given voice in Disney productions. She played the godmother of Cinderella (in the dubbing of 1991), Anita in 101 Dalmatians, Mamie Baba in La Bande à Picsou and the benevolent Wardrobe of The beauty and the Beast.
Voice performer of Hollywood actors such as Bud Spencer, Burt Lancaster, Roger Moore, Charles Bronson or John Wayne, the legendary dubbing actor Claude Bertrand has also lent his voice to many memorable Disney characters. He thus played the burglar Jasper in 101 Dalmatians, the unforgettable Baloo bear in The jungle Book, the cat-rmeur Thomas O’Malley in The Aristocats and the friendly Little Jean in Robin Hood.
Also known for having lent her deep and warm voice to Whoopi Goldberg, the actress Maïk Darah played the mother of Bambi (during the dubbing in 1993), the hyena Shenzi in The Lion King, and more recently the manticore in En Avant et la saxophonist Dorothea Williams in Soul.
