Legendary actor and producer of action movies, Tom Cruise occasionally shines on a more private level. With the approach of the Christmas holidays, for several years, he has indeed established a tradition, as surprising as it is sympathetic.
Tom Cruise, the man turned legend
Whether we like the actor or not, whether we recognize his work as a producer or not, finally whether or not we wonder about his mysterious personality, Tom Cruise has entered this period of his professional career where each of his new actions or decisions fall into the category: “legendary”. A few months away from his 60th birthday, the man who has toured with all the great directors of his time and offered a shovel of action super-productions is at the top of his game and does not seem to come down at all. His stunts, his rants, his running races almost became a running gag … one might think that nothing is surprising about Tom Cruise anymore. Well think again, the actor of Top Gun and producer of the saga Impossible mission is a bottomless pit of surprises.
White chocolate and coconut cakes for Christmas
Between his sentimental relations complicated by his adherence to Scientology, a great discretion in the media – when he does not jump on the sofa of Oprah Winfrey -, the personality of Tom Cruise is essentially unknown to the public. But it happens, as if by a miracle, events in which traits of his character are revealed. For example, her tradition of sending white chocolate and coconut cakes for Christmas to her closest Hollywood friends – we are still talking about a hundred cakes sent each year to many names on the A-List of the profession.
Who are the lucky recipients of this cake? The best known are called, to name a few Henry Cavill, Kirsten Dunst, Cobie Smulders, Rosie O’Donnell. Or star presenters Jimmy Fallon and Graham Norton. Where does this tradition come from, and above all, why this cake precisely ? It seems that the choice of this cake dates back to the time of her relationship with Katie Holmes, a marriage that lasted between 2006 and 2012. It is difficult to precisely date the choice, but it results from a “contest” with Diane Keaton.
A tradition resulting from a tasting competition
The famous actress Diane Keaton had indeed maintained that she knew a better cake than that made by Katie Holmes, then his wife. So she gave him a taste of this white chocolate cake. A very solid candy prepared by the family-owned Doan’s Bakery located in Woodland Hills, north of Los Angeles. The actor thus discovered the cake and admitted its superiority. Since then, he has been loyal to this pastry shop, which according to its owners has been able to survive in part thanks to these massive annual orders.
This is by a reporter for The Guardian, Stuart Heritage, that the information has resurfaced, since the latter had challenged him in an article to send him a cake – in reference to the star’s chocolate indigestion during those early years as an actor, to prove to him that he was a better “cake eater”. And, to the journalist’s delight, Tom Cruise sent him not one but two cakes. If there is one that has the Christmas spirit, it’s Tom Cruise!
As a bonus, here is Henry Cavill’s reaction to this gift unlike any other, a story made on the occasion of the promotion of Mission: Impossible – Fallout in France :
