During the Deauville 2021 festival we had the chance to meet the director of the very good “The Novice”. During our interview, she gave us, in French, her favorite French films.
The Novice, a favorite of Deauville
The 47th Deauville festival (from September 3 to 12) was an opportunity to discover the film The Novice. Director’s first feature film Lauren Hadaway, carried by an excellent Isabelle Fuhrman, which we find more than ten years later Esther (2009). With The Novice, the filmmaker follows a student who gives herself body and soul in rowing to become the best of the club of her university. A discipline that she did not know before, but that she chose precisely for its difficulty. We understand then that, her pleasure, she finds in the effort.
The Novice is a tough but captivating film which has amply convinced us (see our review).
5 films and 1 series made in France
By introducing his film before the screening in Deauville, the director explained to have moved to Paris and, like her character in the film (which draws a lot from her), she sought some form of difficulty in learning French and immersing herself solely in French culture.
So we could not miss the opportunity to ask him for a little top of his French films. Five films (and a series), some cult and obvious, others more recent, which inspired him in one way or another. While waiting for our full interview (available soon on the site), find his recommendations, in French, in video in one article.
The Novice does not yet have a release date in French theaters or on a streaming platform. Find here all our articles on the 47th edition of the American film festival in Deauville.
