While the first two installments were outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), “Deadpool 3” will be well connected with the extended universe of Marvel Studios. The film’s writers recently spoke out to reassure fans.
Deadpool soon in the MCU
Created in 1991 by Rob Liefeld, the mutant Deadpool quickly became an iconic character in Marvel comics. A totally insane mercenary, Wade Wilson has regenerative abilities like his colleague Wolverine. But the comparison between the two characters stops there. Wade Wilson has generalized cancer, which gives him an extremely repulsive physical appearance. But its best asset, is that he himself is aware that he is a comic book hero. A power that allows him to break the fourth wall, and to be literally immortal.
In the cinema, this anti-hero in red tights appeared three times, each time in the guise of Ryan Reynolds. Her first foray on the big screen dates back to 2009when Deadpool makes a brief appearance in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. But the character’s no-nonsense treatment is hugely disappointing to fans. We then have to wait until 2016 to see Ryan Reynolds reprising the role of Wade Wilson in his first solo film: Dead Pool. Faced with the success of the feature film, to classify for the occasion (forbidden to unaccompanied children under 17 in the USA), a sequel was developed in 2018.
Since the acquisition of the 20th Century Fox by Disney in 2019, Deadpool now belongs to the big-eared studio. Fortunately, the firm decided not to reboot Deadpool, but to produce a third film that will be anchored in the MCU. A decision that is both exciting, but has fans worried for one simple reason: will Deadpool keep his irreverence and violence inseparable from his character, or will he be sanitized for the needs of the MCU? The writers have provided an element of response.
How will Deadpool 3 fit into the MCU?
At present, not much is known about this Deadpool 3. Ryan Reynolds will return as the protagonist, while the realization was entrusted to Shawn Levy. Deadpool 3 will therefore mark the third association between the two men after Free Guy and Adam through time. Regarding the violence in the film, Kevin Feige repeatedly said that there was no reason to worry and that, basically, Deadpool will remain Deadpool.
But the integration of Deadpool in the MCU inevitably worries. In a recent interview with Post Cred Podthe screenwriters of Deadpool 3Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick attempted to reassure the public. They consider in particular that the spirit of the MCU will not be a brake on the development of Deadpool 3. Quite the contrary. According to them, make a crazy character evolve in a healthy universe is the best thing that could have happened to him:
It’s a wonderful opportunity from a comedy standpoint, it’s kind of like a fish out of water. Deadpool is a madman at the center of a movie… To release a madman into a very sane world is pure bliss. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.
The duo then clarified that Disney’s takeover of Fox in no way played on their creative process to Deadpool 3 :
You know, this isn’t a wedding we necessarily saw coming. This merging was something outside of our storytelling process. But it’s a happy coincidence, there are beautiful things to do. And we’re doing everything to keep Deadpool deadpool. We are aware that it is possible that if we go too far, Disney asks us to remove a joke. But so far they’ve been incredibly supportive of what we’re doing.
We sincerely hope that Deadpool will keep his identity, and that he will still be aware that he is a movie character. Where the two screenwriters are undoubtedly right is that with the contribution of the MCU within Deadpool 3, the mercenary will be able to offer totally new jokes about the other Marvel heroes. In any case, we can’t wait to see the result.
