In the cinema, “The Strangers” wasn’t the really big mega hit that amazed everyone. With a US gross of over $52 million (us $82 million worldwide) on a budget of just $9 million, it was a pretty decent hit. Especially in home cinema, the horror thriller starring Liv Tyler about a couple who are brutally terrorized by three mysterious, masked strangers without any justification has become more and more popular over the years and has slowly become a real hit. In 2018 there was still a loose sequel with “The Strangers: Victim Night”, which, however, could not tie in with it. So you try it now with a remake.

Renny Harlin has already started production on a new The Strangers movie. The Finnish filmmaker is best known for action fare – above all Die Hard 2, but also Cliffhanger, Deadly Christmas and Twelve Rounds are in his vita. With, among other things, “Der Pakt – The Covenant”, “Mindhunters”, “Exorcist: The Beginning” and above all “A Nightmare on Elm Street 4” he also brings plenty of horror experience with him. As part of the project announcement, he also explains that he is now “returning to his favorite genre”.
Studio Lionsgate (including “John Wick” “Hunger Games”) entrusted with a whole trilogy. But only the story of “The Strangers” is known:
“Riverdale” star Madelaine Petsch plays a young woman who travels across the country with her longtime boyfriend (Froy Gutierrez) to where they want to start their new life. But when their car gives up the ghost on the way, they have to seek shelter in a remote Airbnb. As darkness falls, three masked strangers appear who will now terrorize them until sunrise…
Gabriel Basso (“Hillbilly Elegy”) has already been announced as another cast member. Of course, it is not yet known who will return from this trio in “The Strangers 2” and/or “The Strangers 3”. As for the sequels, it only says that they “should expand the story in new and unexpected ways”.
Due to the fact that production has already started and, in the case of horror films, is often very fast anyway should “The Strangers“ will be in cinemas as early as 2023, 15 years after the original.
