Disney+ is increasingly becoming the number 1 point of contact for everything to do with Marvel: most of the MCU films (and the series) were already there, but since last week “The Amazing Spider-Man 1+2” as well as “Venom” on Disney Plus, thanks to “Spider-Man: No Way Home“ are closely related to the MCU. And there are now the “Defenders” series around “Daredevil” and “Jessica Jones”.
» The Defenders saga on Disney+*
All three seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones, the two seasons each of Luke Cage, Iron Fist and the Daredevil spin-off The Punisher, and the team-up miniseries The Defenders ‘ are now available on Disney+. But how interesting is this for MCU fans anyway? For a long time the connection between Avengers and Defenders very loose and the plot of the series was completely ignored in the films.
However, that has recently changed because since “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the MCU series “Hawkeye” at least “Daredevil” has become quite important for the MCU: Not only did the main character Matt Murdock – played again by Charlie Cox – make his MCU debut in “No Way Home”. Vincent D’Onofrio also returned as main villain Wilson Fisk aka Kingpin in Hawkeye.
So if you want to know more about these characters, who will almost certainly be the focus of the already announced new “Daredevil” series on Disney+, you can’t avoid “Daredevil” – even if it’s still unclear whether it’s really about are exactly the same characters or just variants played by the same actors.
Quite apart from that, “daredevil‘ also the ‘Defenders’ series, which was by far the best received by fans and the trade press.
2nd place is “jessica jones“ with Krysten Ritter as ex-superheroine and private detective. Like all “Defenders” series, the individual seasons are a bit too long and stretch in the middle, but MCU fans should definitely take a look here.
Especially since there are already rumors from sources that are usually quite reliable that Krysten Ritter will soon be playing her role from “Jessica Jones” again in an MCU project – probably initially in the form of a guest appearance, similar to Daredevil and Fisk. So the series could still be quite important.
We can recommend a little less clearly “Luke Cage” and “The Punisher“. The two seasons about the super strong and invulnerable Luke Cage (Mike Colter) bring a lot of fresh air, thanks to the setting in Harlem and a predominantly black cast, like “Black Panther”, but that was much better received by the critics than by the audience.
And with the brutal action series “The Punisher” it’s exactly the opposite, here the fans were much more enthusiastic than most critics. After all: Both Mike Colter and “The Punisher” star Jon Bernthal have basically signaled their willingness to return. And that’s good, because Luke Cage and the Punisher could certainly find their way into the MCU at some point – and it seems hard to imagine them being recast.
“Avengerswas a great triumph for the MCU in 2012: The first meeting of Iron Man, Captain America and Co. grossed more than 1.5 billion dollars worldwide and was great fun. And “The Defenders“? In comparison, it was a real disappointment.
The first half of the eight-part mini-series is still relatively successful, but the second half goes downhill steeply. So there’s only one recommendation here, with a big but – maybe just watch the first few episodes of the Defenders’ bickering and fighting.
And at the very end of the list is “Iron Fist‘ starring Finn Jones as martial arts superhero Danny Rand. And that’s where we get to the heart of the problem: The action in Iron Fist is just too unspectacular for a series about a hero with breathtaking fighting skills – that was not only better in the thematically similar MCU film “Shang-Chi And The Legend Of The Rings”, but also in “Daredevil”.
So the really pretty dull series is only worth it for hardcore superhero fans. and To be honest, we find it difficult to imagine that the characters Iron Fist and Finn Jones will be brought back for an MCU project in the future.
