In a cult scene from “Crazy, Stupid, Love”, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling redo the famous lift from “Dirty Dancing”. The rehearsals for this movement were a real ordeal for the actress, which made her partner laugh a lot.
Why wearing Dirty Dancing was torture for Emma Stone?
Crazy, Stupid, Love: love in crisis
After I Love You, Phillip Morris, Glenn Ficarra, and John Requa bring together a prestigious cast for their second feature film. Released in 2011, Crazy, Stupid, Love begins with the painful breakup between Emily (Julianne Moore) and Cal (Steve Carell) after years of marriage where routine took over passion.
When he learns that his wife is having an affair with co-worker David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon), Cal loses what little self-confidence he has left. At the bottom of the hole, he lets himself go and quickly sinks into depression. One evening, while he continues to lament his fate at the bar, shouting his misfortunes to anyone who wants to hear them, he meets Jacob (Ryan Gosling), a regular at the place.
Tired of seeing Cal ruminate and drink his cocktails with a straw, this eternal bachelor decides to take him under his wing. As a great generous seducer, he teaches her how to be comfortable, helps her to redo a more trendy wardrobe, and highlights her assets.
Gradually, Cal takes a liking to his new life. Meanwhile, Jacob is overwhelmed by emotions he thought he would never face. The young man falls madly in love with Hannah (Emma Stone), who has just experienced disillusion about marriage.
Marisa Tomei, Analeigh Tipton, Joey King, and John Carroll Lynch round out the cast of Crazy, Stupid, Love. A romantic comedy is full of twists, which manages to surprise by skilfully crossing its many sentimental intrigues.
The birth of a duo
The film marks the first collaboration between Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. The duo then reformed for the thriller Gangster Squad but especially for the acclaim La La Land. Rewarded by an Oscar for her performance in Damien Chazelle’s musical, the actress looks back on her complicity with her partner in 2018.
During a question and answer session organized at the Telluride Film Festival, the actress declares about Ryan Gosling, quoted by 20 minutes:
He is a very dear and great friend. I couldn’t imagine my life without him. He is really special. It bothers me just to talk about it.

She adds about the pleasure to play alongside him :
It’s great to play with him because he loves collaborating and he’s always happy to share. He taught me a lot, especially to be generous.
A very complicated scene for Emma Stone
However, it wasn’t always rosy in the professional relationship that unites the two actors. Visiting Graham Norton’s talk show in 2017 to promote La La Land Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling talk about the cult scene of Crazy, Stupid, Love in which they perform the scope of dirty dancing.
One moment was extremely distressing for the actress, who realized she simply hated being carried during filming. After reminiscing about a gym class that went wrong as a child, the star explains, quoted by premiere:
Little did I know that I had an internalized phobia of being lifted over someone’s head about six feet off the ground.
She then asks Ryan Gosling to reveal what happened during their rehearsals, to which he responds with humor:
It’s never happened to me, but I imagine if a possum fell out of a tree and tried to gouge your eyes out, it would be something similar.
Emma Stone concludes about this nightmare, which caused her to be replaced by a liner:
It was too much. I broke down nervously. I had a real crisis… I had to lie down on the ground.
