Please note that the following details the Cowboy Bebop series, available on Netflix. If you have not yet seen it and do not want to know anything about its contents, then it is strongly recommended that you stop reading this article now.
Spike, Jet, Faye, and even Ein: the Bebop crew is (almost) complete in Cowboy Bebop, a live-action reboot of the famous Japanese anime offered exclusively by Netflix since last Friday. Only one character was missing, in this case the young hacker Ed. A sizeable absense, so much does it occupy a role certainly secondary but no less memorable in the original work.
The spectators having seen the ten episodes of the remake can nevertheless attest it: Ed is not really absent from the series. Mentioned during the series (through its nickname, “Radical Ed”) the latter finally appears at the very end of episode 10, at the turn of a bonus scene as surprising as it is unexpected.
It is Eden Perkins who was chosen to lend his features to the character. The performer using neutral pronouns signs for the occasion his very first performance on screen. An appearance as short as it is memorable, which could give rise to more time of presence if a season 2 were to be ordered by Netflix. But by the way, why was Ed not included in the main cast of the series?
“Ed doesn’t appear until the ninth episode of the anime. So he’s not a central character of the crew and it was important to take the time to develop chemistry between the other characters to understand them and do advance the story “ showrunner Andre Nemec justified himself in the debriefing program entitled Cowboy Bebop: Unlocked.
Intervening remotely, Eden Perkins, as for iel, evoked his experience of filming, revealing to have adored slipping into the skin of Ed in particular because of his costume but also of his wig which they describes as “very cool to wear”.
The 10 episodes of Cowboy Bebop, as well as the eponymous animated series, are available now on Netflix.
