Comancheria: why is the film part of a “trilogy”?

Comancheria : a mix of genres

Released in 2016, Comancheria is a film that took a long time to develop before being released in major theaters. Indeed, his script was classified in 2012 in the famous “black list”, which identifies the best scenarios awaiting production. Directed by David Mackenzie (Fists against the walls), the feature film received a very good critical reception, in particular because of its hybrid atmosphere between western, thriller and heist film.

Comancheria follows two brothers who, following the death of their mother, organize a series of heists. To do this, they only target the branches of the same bank that they have to reimburse. On their criminal route, they find themselves chased by a soon-to-be retired Ranger and his deputy, determined to put them out of harm’s way.

Comancheria has a nice cast with Jeff Bridges, Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Gil Birmingham.

A screenwriter present on three different films

Known for playing in the first two seasons of Sons of Anarchy, Taylor Sheridan started writing in the early 2010s. This is how a particular idea came to her: make a trilogy exploring the consequences of exploring the American West. It is in this sense that he finds himself in the scenario of the masterpiece Sicario released in 2015 and directed by Denis Villeneuve. Comancheria is the second installment of the trilogy, while Wind river released in 2017 (directed and scripted by Sheridan) is the final opus.

As the screenwriter explains during his interview in First, although these three films have nothing in common in terms of plots, characters and common threads, however, they have the same theme :

It is an exploration of the new American frontier, of the consequences of the conquest of the West that we still suffer today. Arizona in Sicario, West Texas in Comancheria. The tone is different because each of the films reflects different ways of dealing with the tragedies of life.

Indeed, Comancheria takes place in a region of the western United States, in which Texans, Indians and Latinos intersect. This culture shock is similar in Sicario and Wind river.
