“Sonic The Hedgehog 2” is far from the end: A Sonic Cinematic Universe is to be created along the lines of the MCU. “Sonic The Hedgehog 3” and a Knuckles series have already been confirmed. But this is probably just the beginning…

Cinematic Universe like Marvel: After "Sonic 2" comes "Sonic 3", a spin-off series and probably much more - cinema news
Paramount Pictures

The blue racer Sonic has been racing across the cinema screens for the second time this week. Should “Sonic The Hedgehog 2” be as successful as the debut, then the Paramount studio responsible can look forward to a hefty income. Because “Sonic The Hedgehog” was one of the most successful cinema hits of 2020 and took almost 320 million dollars worldwide. “Sonic” was a box-office magnet, especially in the USA, where the film went down in history as the most successful video game adaptation of all time, but also in Germany, where it reached number 4 in the annual charts.

A success that prompts Paramount to think even bigger. According to consistent media reports, “Sonic” producer Toby Asher announced: “We are creating a Sonic Cinematic Universe.” With this statement, he is obviously referring to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the most successful film franchise of all time, the success of which every major Hollywood studio would like to emulate. Much like the MCU, the SCU won’t just be limited to movies. After all, in addition to another feature film, a spin-off series for the Paramount+ streaming service is already in the works.

It starts with a “Knuckles” series

Knuckles (voiced by Idris Elba) makes his big-screen debut in Sonic The Hedgehog 2. The red Echnida is used by Dr. Hired Robotnik to get one over on Sonic. Knuckles not only shows strong physical strength but also provides some of the funniest moments in the film with his simple knitted manner. Paramount seems to have recognized the potential of the popular anti-hero even before it was released in cinemas and announced its plans for the future in February: Knuckles is getting its own series, scheduled for release on Paramount+ in 2023. Idris Elba (“The Suicide Squad”) is once again on board as a speaker.

Paramount+ is also scheduled to be launched in Germany in the second half of 2022 and will be available both individually and as an automatic component of Sky Cinema (whether as a regular subscription or as a ticket). The Knuckles series, which does not yet have an official title, will probably end up exclusively on Paramount’s streaming service in this country too.

“Sonic The Hedgehog 3” has also been confirmed

There will also be at least one more adventure of the SEGA hedgehog in the cinema because Sonic The Hedgehog 3 has also been announced. Although there is no information at all about the sequel, the end credits scene from Part 2 already suggests the direction in which the plot of “Sonic 3” will develop. It comes to the appearance of another popular character from the gaming universe. For spoiler reasons, we won’t reveal who it is at this point. If you don’t care about spoilers or you’ve already seen the movie, we recommend the following article, in which we analyzed the post-credits scene and introduce you to the “Sonic” newcomer:

“Sonic 3” and the Knuckles series could be just the beginning. Finally, the announcement of a Sonic Cinematic Universe suggests Paramount has even bigger plans. In any case, the long video game career of the SEGA icon still offers plenty of material and characters for other films and series.
