After a difficult summer marked by the introduction of the health pass, the rooms regained in September a volume of attendance close to the scores before the health crisis. However, the numbers do not exceed the ceilings either.
According to CNC figures, French cinemas garnered 9 million admissions during the month of September. This score is significantly higher than that of 2020, which stood at 5.62 million, an increase of 60%! Something to give hope for the coming months.
Attendance is therefore recovering, approaching the figures of previous years, before the Covid pandemic. By comparison, the month of September 2019 attracted 11.2 million spectators in theaters. In 2018, there were 10.9 million tickets sold, down compared to 2017 and its 11.3 million admissions.
In any case, 2021 is almost at the level of 2016 (10 million), 2015 (9.5 million) or 2014 (9.3 million). If the month of September of this year succeeded in restoring color to cinemas, it is in particular thanks to Dune, which managed to attract 1.7 million people in two weeks. Shang-Chi was also a valuable locomotive with his 1.2 million torn tickets.
Bac Nord is not to be outdone with nearly a million admissions in September, bringing its total to 1.8 million action fans. Black Box, a thriller starring Pierre Niney released on September 8, has 700,000 spectators on the clock, also helping to boost the figures for the past month.
According to French Film, “These figures contrast with the results achieved overall by the arthouse offering, where the underperformance (The Origin of the World, Un triomphe, Serre moi fort, France, Les amours d’Anaïs, La terre des hommes, A story of love and desire, Ahed’s knee, Blue Bayou, Fragile …) have multiplied to a level rarely reached, which raises questions. Delicious and The Wicked in particular. “
In total, 46.65 million admissions have been made by hexagonal theaters since the reopening, according to CNC estimates. French productions recorded a market share of 43.6%, slightly ahead of American cinema (41.7%). The share of other films was 14.7%.
With Dying Can Wait, Venom 2, Eiffel, The Last Duel or The Addams Family 2, the month of October has serious potential to break records.
