For many fans of horror literature, Edgar Allan Poe (1809 – 1849) is still the true king of scary stories. Raven’s Hollow tells a story about Poe as a young soldier (which he really was!). In the trailer, the film looks beautifully atmospheric and – for an indie film – very well produced. He offers an explanation of what might have inspired the American to write his horror stories, which still give readers goosebumps almost 200 years later. Anyway, here are already hinted at some of Poe’s best-known works like The Raven, Buried Alive, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Telltale Heart:
At 17, Poe (William Moseley) becomes a cadet at West Point Military School. On a patrol, he and some comrades (including Callum Woodhouse and Mathis Landwehr) come across a horribly battered corpse hanging from a tree. They dutifully try to find out what could have happened. They end up in a remote village called Raven’s Hollow, almost cut off from the rest of civilization.
The others want to leave as soon as possible. But Poe is fascinated by the morbid atmosphere and the eccentric characters that live in this place. He decides to investigate further and to question the residents. While most people in Raven’s Hollow remain dismissive, the beautiful and mysterious Charlotte Ingram (Melanie Zanetti) is ready to help. But then inexplicable things happen that scare Poe properly …
The film can be seen on German cinema screens in September 2022 before the US start. Then “Raven’s Hollow” will be shown in seven major German cities as part of the Fantasy Filmfest presented by DashFUN. Dates and tickets for the iconic genre events can be found here.
Christopher Hatton, who last directed the entertaining sci-fi action Battle Of The Damned nine years ago, starring Dolph Lundgren, is directing and writing. The fact that his new film comes across as much more atmospheric and aesthetic than its predecessor, even in the trailer, is primarily due to the camera work of Michael Rizzi (“Tree Of Peace”).
The male lead is played by William Moseley from The Chronicles of Narnia, while the female lead is played by Melanie Zanetti (Netflix’s “Love And Monsters”). By the way, the Australian also sings the great “The Unquiet Grave” here – an English folk song that is used in the trailer.
Other important parts include Kate Dickie (Lysa Arryn from Seasons 1 and 4 of Game Of Thrones) and David Hayman from the TV series Taboo.
