After an online edition in 2020, the Champs-Elysées Film Festival is back in the cinemas of the legendary avenue des Champs Elysées, to celebrate its 10th anniversary, from September 14 to 21, 2021. All you need to know about the program!
Champs Elysées Film Festival 2021, ask for the program! A few days before the launch of this 10th anniversary edition, which will be held precisely from September 14 to 21, still on the legendary avenue des Champs-Elysées, here are some of the highlights and guests. Discover the list of films in competition, and their juries.
The Festival, created by producer, distributor and operator Sophie Dulac, will once again offer the cream of French and American independent cinema, with a vast selection of unseen films and retrospectives of nuggets to (re) discover. In total, more than 70 films and nearly 65 screenings will take place in cinemas on the avenue des Champs-Élysées (Balzac, Lincoln, Gaumont Champs-Élysées and PublicisCinémas).
To celebrate this anniversary, the program will also look back on the works that have marked the various editions through a special retrospective 10 years of independent American cinema, with a selection of 9 short films and 6 feature films from its previous American competitions.
“After the period we have just lived through and a fully digital 2020 edition, it is time to once again put the spotlight on independent cinema, to make it accessible to all, and to recreate the emotion, the discovery and the sharing that have made up the DNA of the Champs-Élysées Film Festival for 10 years“, says Sophie Dulac, President and Founder of Champs-Élysées Film Festival.”What matters to me is that this festival exists face-to-face, that people come back to the Champs, that we show films that we want to show, quality films of course.. I approach this edition in a very positive state of mind. “
For those who could not make it to this edition, the VOD platforms UniversCiné and Tënk will make available a large number of French and American independent films presented in the last editions.
Jim Cummings and Susan Seidelman as guests of honor
Two guests of honor are announced, “both embodying American independent cinema with strength and commitment“: the director, actor and producer Jim Cummings, revealed to the French public by the festival in 2016, will be the guest of honor of the retrospective 10 years of independence, and will present on this occasion his latest film The Beta Test. American director, producer, screenwriter, actress and editor Susan Seidelman will be the guest of honor of the new Riot Girls section.
The tenth anniversary marks the creation of a new Riot Girls section, “driven by the desire to create a space of encounters and flashes around the rage for life, resistance, rebellion and freedom“. 5 French and American feature films highlighting the underground scene of the 1980s filmed by women are scheduled, and a round table will be organized around this theme with Susan Seidelman, Virginie Thevenet, Jeanne Added, Marie-Claude Treilhou and Mathilde Carton, moderated by journalist, author and critic Iris Brey.
“This is a section that we already wanted to offer last year, but since it was an online version, it was a bit complicated, Sophie Dulac tells us. It’s been a while since we have made a completely new section around these iconic films, and especially which are the founders of a certain independence. Films from the 80s, filmed by women, on an underground scene. It’s been a long time since we saw this, and then it impacted, influenced a whole generation. We really wanted to put that in the spotlight.“
Feature and short film competitions
Regarding the competitions, the feature films 2021 jury will be chaired by Thomas Lilti (author and director in particular of Hippocrates and First Year), surrounded by Agathe Rousselle (actress, Titanium), Yael Naim (musician, director, visual artist and composer of music from films), Aurel (director of the animated film Josep, and press cartoonist) and Elie Wajeman (author, director and screenwriter).
8 French feature films and 8 independent American feature films will make up the official feature film competitions. The films will compete for the Audience Awards and for the Jury and Critics’ Awards.
