“Triangle Of Sadness” is by celebrated Swede Ruben Östlund. The director, screenwriter and producer had already scooped up a number of major awards with his predecessor films “Fhehere Majeure” and “The Square”. These included three Guldbagge Awards (the Swedish equivalent of the Oscar), the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival, six European Film Awards, and Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Foreign Language Work.
The filmmaker triumphed again in Cannes in May 2022 with his latest work. The reactions of international criticism were of a rather divided nature. For example, we only gave 2.5 out of a possible 5 stars in the official DashFUN review. What not only to the excessive, overlong and for one or the other moviegoer surely hard to bear barf and faecal scenes lies – so “Triangle Of Sadness” could actually become the disgusting film of the year in cinemas. Rather, our author Michael Meyns complains about a lack of subtlety and an exaggerated tendency towards banalities in the rest of the implementation.
While everyone was talking about the film in May 2022 due to its victory in Cannes and the controversial disgusting scenes, it has received new attention in the past few days through very sad news: South African actress Charlbi Dean Kriek died unexpectedly on August 29 at the age of only 32 years – “Triangle Of Sadness” is her last film. You can see “Triangle Of Sadness” in German cinemas from October 13, 2022.
In addition to Charlbi Dean Kriek, other important roles include Harris Dickinson, who can just be seen on local screens with “The Crayfish Song”, Zlatko Buric from the “Pusher” trilogy, Dolly de Leon (“Verdict”) and Woody Harrelson (“ Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”).
In “Triangle Of Sadness” we meet male model Carl (Harris Dickinson) and his friend and colleague Yaya (Charlbi Dean Kriek). There is a lot of crisis in the relationship between the two – not least because she is significantly more successful than him both on the catwalk and as a social media influencer. A circumstance that she lets her beau feel again and again with relish.
The couple is invited on a luxury cruise on a superyacht. But relaxing with champagne and caviar is not to be thought of for long. Because Captain Smith (Woody Harrelson) suffers from a nervous breakdown. He locks himself in his cabin with a lot of alcohol and leaves the exaggerated chief stewardess Paula (Vicki Berlin) alone with the spoiled guests and their absurd wishes for the time being.
However, during a strong storm at sea, Smith shows himself on deck. He promptly insists on throwing a lavish dinner for the passengers. Extreme seasickness is pre-programmed for almost everyone. And indeed: They soon spit the expensive food and drinks in all directions. The trip becomes even more catastrophic when a group of Somali pirates try to hijack the ship the next morning…
