Would “Camping 3” be subversive? No, but the schoolboy humor of the saga saw its limit during a preview in Marrakech in 2016, where the public was shocked by certain scenes perceived as saucy, including one showing a game of volleyball with naturists. A criticism that made Franck Dubosc react, and this reaction was even more badly received …
Camping 3 : continuation and end of the saga
The third installment of the saga Camping was a success in theaters with 3.2 million admissions in France when it was released in 2016. If Camping 3 does less well than its two predecessors, the first having 5.9 million admissions and the second 3.9 million, the franchise keeps however a great popularity. A popularity in particular due to its sympathetic cast counting a good number of famous faces, led by Franck Dubosc in his eternal role of flirtatious beauf, and to a family atmosphere and inoffensive humor. But this third adventure, which still takes place at Camping des Flots Bleus, received a very mixed reception and tinged with scandal in Morocco, which surprised the authors and crews of the film.
A game of volleyball at the heart of the scandal
Faithful to Marrakech laughter festival, Franck Dubosc should surely not have expected such a reaction during the presentation of Camping 3 in preview during the edition of 2016. While the film could count on the main part of its cast and on a continuity of his comic style to seduce the public, it was quite different for the Moroccan spectators. In question, a game of volleyball where the Flots Bleus team faces a team of naturists. A sequence that was not a surprise, since Franck Dubosc and Antoine Duléry in particular had happily posed during the filming with naturist extras.
During the preview, the sequence was very poorly received, in the midst of other sequences also considered too saucy. Results, of spectators leave the screening before the end, and the film receives a ban on those under 16 for its distribution in Morocco. At this point, the scandal is not yet fully constituted. It is indeed a reaction from Franck Dubosc at the microphone of TeleStar who will ignite the powder.
It is difficult here because we realize that culturally there are ten centuries behind. Veiled women and children left the room during the screening. Well yes… There is a sequence of nudists on the volleyball beach. (…) We hadn’t thought of that. You realize, Camping 3 Forbidden to under 16s…
A public apology for Franck Dubosc
The comedian and actor, very attached to his co-creation with Fabien Onteniente, is depressed and upset, and does not immediately measure the impact of his formulation “ten centuries behind” in the Moroccan kingdom, very traditionalist. These words, repeated in abundance on social networks, create controversy. And constrain Franck Dubosc to apologize publicly, which he does on Twitter and Facebook. If he apologizes on the form, he nevertheless marks his regret with an elegant formula: “Where my children laugh, yours must close their eyes … That’s what saddens me.”
The controversy quickly died down. 5 years later, the project of a Camping 4 is however very badly embarked, with a Franck Dubosc eager to stop there, as he declared in March 2021 to Leisure TV. Let us add to this that with the disappearance of Claude Brasseur in December 2020, pillar of the films with his character of Jacky Pic, we must realize that nothing will be the same as before, and that it is undoubtedly high time to find out. Stop…
