Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” had the second best first weekend of 2021, behind “Fast and Furious 9”, but ahead of “Kaamelott” and “Black Widow”. It’s better than Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet”, released in August 2020.
The excellent start of Dune, a new feature film by Denis Villeneuve, is confirmed! After a very good 1st day France (more than 181,000 admissions including 65,000 in preview), the film continues this good momentum by achieving the second best weekend of 2021, behind Fast and Furious 9 but ahead of Kaamelott – First part.
For its first weekend, Dune brings together precisely 878,409 spectators in 647 theaters. For comparison, Fast and Furious 9 totaled 1,101,038 admissions at the end of the first weekend. Let us recall the good first weekend scores also of Kaamelott (837,592 admissions) and Black Widow (702,553), both released this summer.
Still for comparison, Tenet drew 809,601 spectators for its first weekend when it released in August 2020.
Dune also favored the recovery towards cinemas, because, as indicated by CBO Box Office, attendance increased by 45% and reached 2.1 million cumulative admissions.
Thanks to this good start, Dune manages to dislodge the Marvel blockbuster Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings from the first place of the top weekend. The film attracted 172,647 more spectators this weekend, a total of close to one million admissions.
