Bodyguard : an unforgettable soundtrack
In 1992, the filmmaker Mick Jackson directs Bodyguard. Worn by Kevin Costner and singer Whitney Houston, the feature film is a benchmark for a whole generation of spectators. The story tells the fate of Frank Farmer, a former member of the Secret Service, who becomes the bodyguard of Rachel, a rising singer and actress, threatened by an unknown fan. Bodyguard quickly became a cult film, notably for the chemistry between Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. The work was even nominated for an Oscar for Best Song (I Will Always Love You). On the box office side, the feature film grossed more than $ 411 million in revenue. As for the soundtrack of Bodyguard, it is the best-selling of all time.
A remake is in preparation
Thirty years later Warner is working on a remake of Bodyguard. The studio commissioned playwright Matthew Lopez to write a re-interpretation of Mick Jackson’s film. Lawrence Kasdan, already producer of the original film, will oversee this remake.
Director Matthew Lopez made a name for himself in 2018 for his play The Inheritance, which has been described by the press as the “Most important American coin of the century”. His play racked up awards, and he remains the first Latin writer to win one of these awards: Olivier Award, Drama Desk Award, Evening Standard Award, London Critics Circle Award, Outer Critics Circle Award, Drama League Award, WhatsOnStage Award and Southbank Sky Arts Award.
The remake of Bodyguard will not be his first film experience since he has already worked as a screenwriter for HBO and Netflix, and developed films for Plan B Entertainment and Working Title. He also adapted The Legend of Georgia McBride for the screen. In October 2020 he signed a television development agreement with Amazon Studios. He is also writing a film adaptation of the novel.
