After the powerful “Amy”, released in 2015, the existence of Amy Winehouse, the famous singer with such a particular voice, is about to be scrutinized again on the big screen. After heavy criticism of the project, the late star’s father stepped in.
Amy Winehouse, forever fascinating
British singer in the grain of voice undoubtedly drunk enchanted music lovers around the world. His short but intense career, concluded by a real tragedy, continues to mark the spirits. Also, while musical feature films – likeElvisoff to a good start in the race for the Oscars – are on the rise, a biopic on Amy Winehouse is currently being filmed. The latter should be called Back to Blackin tribute to the song – and to the second successful album – of the artist who left too soon.
At the direction of the upcoming feature film, we find Sam Taylor-Johnson (Gypsy, Fifty Shades of grey). The one who knew Amy Winehouse well will narrate the rise of the latter, her incredible success, but also her terrible descent into hell. To our colleagues from Deadlinethe filmmaker insisted on the fact that her project aims in particular to “honor” the genius of the young woman, whom she counted among her friends.
Back to Black already criticized?
The question of the interpreter of the star, sadly member of the morbid club of 27, divides Internet users. Rather than turning to an internationally renowned actress, the studios chose a “newcomer”. It is thus Marisa Abela who will have the difficult task of lending her features to the interpreter of Rehab. If the young woman is still little known to the general public, fans of the series Industry must, conversely, see very well who it is. In this recent series produced by HBO, the actress thus portrays the character of Yasmin.
Our colleagues from Movieweb we learn that many fans of Amy Winehouse deplore this choice on the part of the production. In effect, the latter believe that Marisa Abela does not look like the star at all ! Many campaigned for Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) – whose talents as an actress are no longer to be proven – slips into the skin of the artist. There was a time when the name of the Swedish Noomi Rapace (You Won’t Be Alone) had also circulated.
Mitch Winehouse’s response
In an interview given to TMZ, the father of Amy Winehouse gave his opinion on the controversy. At the time of the release ofAmy, he had entrusted to The Guardian to have simply been revolted by the film. According to him, the project published in 2015, which also obtained Oscar for Best Documentary, portrayed him “in the worst way possible”. But this time, he does not seem at all in the same mood. As proof, he bluntly defends the presence of Marisa Abela.
Marisa is a very good choice for the role, even if she doesn’t look like two drops of water to Amy.
So here it is a position that could not be clearer for the singer’s father. Especially since, as Mitch Winehouse adds, Eddie Marsan (Golem, the London Slayer), the actor who plays his role, has little to do with him physically. According to him, the spectators “dwell too much on the similarities”. Now remains to be seen what he will think of the feature film as a whole…
