Comedian Ben Affleck recently looked back on his bad experience with “Justice League” and explained the reasons that prompted him to give up directing the solo Batman movie. Indeed, initially, Ben Affleck was to stage the new adventure of the Dark Knight.
Justice league : hell for everyone
In 2017, the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) released its huge crossover (five years after the competition Avengers) with Justice league. After the success of Man of steel and Batman v superman, it is Zack Snyder who is responsible for directing the first superheroic reunion of the DCEU. Unfortunately, due to the death of her daughter, Zack Snyder abandons film before finalizing it. Warner therefore calls Joss Whedon (the director of the first two Avengers) to the rescue. The latter is responsible for the studio to complete and improve Justice league.
You know the result. Justice league is a hybrid and failed film, torn between the diametrically opposed visions of two different filmmakers. Shortly after the film’s release, some of the comedians like Gal Gadot and Ray Fisher strongly criticized Joss Whedon’s working methods. Faced with this resounding failure, Warner decided to give Zack Snyder the opportunity to redo Justice league. A bet that has paid off since the filmmaker gave birth to the excellent Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a longer editing and above all much more personal.
Ben Affleck speaks
Now it’s Ben Affleck’s turn to speak. The comedian, who has been playing Batman in the DCEU for Batman v superman, he too expressed about his unpleasant experience while filming Justice league at the microphone of The LA Times :
Justice League was a bad experience because of a confluence of things: my own life, my divorce, being too far from loved ones, conflicting agendas, then Zack’s personal tragedy. It was just the worst experience of my career. It was horrible. There was everything I didn’t like about my job. I was like “I will never do that again”.
A state of affairs that clearly disgusted him with the character of Batman. Initially, after Justice league, Ben Affleck was to write, direct, and perform the Dark Knight’s next solo adventure. But his experience on Justice league made him think twice. Until simply abandoning the project:
I thought about it and thought to myself, “I won’t be happy to do this.” The person who will make this movie has to like it. I probably would have loved to do it at 32 or something. But that’s when I started to realize it wasn’t worth it anymore. I preferred to reorient and recalibrate my priorities.
We even thought that the comedian was going to hang up the role of Batman. But fans were surprised when they learned that Ben Affleck would be back in the shoes of Gotham’s vigilante for the purposes of the film. The Flash. As for the film alone on Batman, the project was picked up by Matt Reeves, who shot a brand new Bruce Wayne adventure with Robert Pattinson in the lead role. The batman, which will not be integrated into the DCEU, is expected on March 2, while The Flash will be released on November 2, 2022.
