16 years after the end of the legendary series “Alerte à Malibu” (French title of “Baywatch”), a film adaptation was released in cinemas in 2017. Promised to success, the feature film was to lead to a new television project. But not everything went as planned.
Baywatch: I’m always heeeere
How not to remember Baywatch, renamed Baywatch on our French lands? David Hasselhoff who shouted his orders with charisma, Pamela Anderson and Yasmine Bleeth who ran in slow motion on the beach, David Charvet present to represent the tricolor, its mythical credits … In short, Baywatch instantly makes you nostalgic, because it proudly represents the 90s.
However, despite its monstrous success in the United States and internationally, this series which tells the adventures of a team of lifeguards on the beaches of Malibu is the fruit of his time. Something that Hollywood did not understand, by deciding to make a film adaptation in 2017 with Baywatch. Paramount Pictures puts the means to attract the public: Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron for the big biceps, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra and Kelly Rohrbach for the feminine touch. In addition, with Seth Gordon who has enjoyed success with How to kill your boss and Pay-per-view scam, we have the promise of a somewhat borderline comedy, which does not take itself seriously and accepts the qualitative criticisms that we have often addressed to the series.
A major failure
Despite a “light” budget of $ 69 million, Paramount hoped to account for the presence of its cast, including Dwayne Johnson and Zac Efron who have proven their bankable capital more than once. If the film exploded at the box office, it might even have resurrected the franchise as a new series televised. Baywatch was in preparation.
Only, the disastrous reviews of the film, combined with a commercial result below what was expected (177 million dollars collected) quickly buried the project. This is what David Chokachi, former actor of the original series, reveals in the podcast. The Production Meeting :
The film was released, and the project literally fell apart. CBS was going to launch, we had a meeting about it, and a location was chosen. But in the end, they preferred to bet on the reboot of Magnum this year.
Critics from the cast itself
If there is a TV reboot, it will probably be without the headliners, but also the old ones. Indeed, Pamela Anderson, which nevertheless makes a cameo in the film, did not hesitate to tackle him severely on the Watch show What Happens Live With Andy Cohen :
I didn’t like the movie. Let bad television remain bad television. This is what makes its charm. Trying to make films from series is quite simply confusing the very definition of television. $ 65 million can help make a great movie. We did our series with only $ 500,000. And we had the same explosions, the same scenes in the water. That was the fun part of this series: knowing how to be creative!
