Who to play Ken opposite Margot Robbie in the feature film “Barbie”? That’s the question we asked ourselves and Warner decided to play it safe offering the role to Ryan Gosling. It’s hard to imagine better placed to play such a role.
Margot Robbie is going to be Barbie in the movies
Launched on the market at the end of the 1950s, the Barbie doll has crossed the ages, taking on different guises. It will soon be (re) discovered in dark rooms, in the guise of Margot Robbie, in a surprising feature film adaptation. A project that has everything to arouse curiosity, because in addition to the original material and the main actress, it is Greta Gerwig who will be behind the camera to wrap a screenplay co-written with Noah Baumbach.
While one might have feared that the company would become a kind of purely commercial product intended to boost sales of dolls, it becomes much more interesting with all the talents involved. There is indeed something to be done in these current times, to grab all the Barbie imagery to develop a feminist discourse or, at least, in phase with our era. This is what we expect from someone like Greta Gerwig, who has until then unpacked a real sensitivity to film female characters.
Ryan Gosling as Ken? An evidence
In front of the camera, Margot Robbie fits the role perfectly. It is easy to imagine her as a Barbie, with her physique and her talent. According to Deadline, another wildly obvious choice was made for the cast. The American media announces that Ryan Gosling is in negotiations to take over the role of Ken, the famous doll companion.
Like this probable future playmate, he has the profile to bring this character to life. We will even say that we are almost in the cliché with this duo of stars, but we precisely expect the film to manage to display more complexity in its subject. Ryan Gosling initially turned down the role, because of a busy schedule. The situation has changed and his participation seems very well on track to materialize. Warner Bros. insisted in particular on obtaining his services and we can understand that.
The preparations are progressing and the shooting of Barbie could therefore take place somewhere in 2022. No release date is currently planned. An arrival in 2023 appears to be the most plausible outcome.
