“Avatar“ is a project that only James Cameron can bring to the screen: super expensive, super ambitious and super successful. And also the fact that in December 2022, after a 13-year wait, “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” hits theaters is largely thanks to Cameron. It is known that after “Avatar 2” but announced three more sequels – yes “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” may not be directed by Cameron himselfas he now announced.
“The ,Avatar’ Movies eat up all my time,” Cameron told Film Magazine Empire. “There are other exciting things I’m working on. I think sometime in the future, I don’t know if after [‚Avatar 3‘] or [‚Avatar 4‘]I will pass the baton to another directorwho I trust so I can do other things that interest me. Or maybe not. I dont know.”
For explanation: “Avatar 2” is finished and probably just needs a bit of fine-tuning, “Avatar 3” is also twisted, but what with the “Avatar” films with their countless computer effects is only the smallest part of the work, and will then be released in cinemas in 2024.
The actual shooting with real actors in front of the camera was done in one go, so “will [Avatar 3] Definitely coming too,” Cameron confronted Empire insured.
So why the uncertainty as to whether Cameron will drop out after Part 3 or Part 4 (if at all)? “‘Avatar 4’ is a top film. A real one motherfucker. I honestly hope I can shoot it,” said Cameron. “But that depends on the market. […] I really hope we can do parts 4 and 5 because it’s a big story after all.”
In plain language this means: whether “Avatar 4” and “Avatar 5” are filmed at all and who sits in the director’s chair also depends on whether “Avatar 2” and especially “Avatar 3” will be at least as successful as part 1, which is after all the most successful film of all time.
Should also “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3” hit, we could very well imagine that Cameron was somehow persuaded to make the last two films himself. Because “Alita: Battle Angel” and “Terminator: Dark Fate”, which Cameron only produced and did not direct himself, went quite badly at the box office.
Speaking of bathing: “Avatar 2: The Way Of Water” will start in German cinemas on December 14, 2022.
