While his “Avatar : The Way of the Water”, scheduled for December 14, 2022, is expected to be the film of the decade – at least – legendary director James Cameron has hinted that he could step back on the last two episodes of his saga”Avatar 4″ and “Avatar 5”.
Avatar 2 approaching, James Cameron sees further
On December 14, 2022, James Cameron may have – again – upset the film industry by presenting Avatar : The Way of the Watermovie sequel Avatar from 2009, 3D sci-fi phenomenon movie full of major technological innovations. This story of the encounter, in 2154, between humans and the Na’vi, indigenous people of the planet Pandora, quickly found tens of millions of delighted spectators, and still holds the record for the biggest success at the box- office history with over $2.8 billion cashed in the world.

After Avatar : The Water Way, three other films should then see the light of day. First of all Avatar 3which was shot at the same time as Avatar : The Way of the Waterand which is scheduled for release in France in December 18, 2024. Avatar 4 also has a theoretical release date, located at December 18, 2026. A fifth opus, a priori final, is also planned, without any production or release start date having been communicated to date. In an exclusive interview with EmpireJames Cameron spoke about his vision, the future of his franchiseand gave important information about the last two films.
Everything I want to say about family, about sustainability, about climate, about nature, these themes that are important in my life and in my filmography, I can express it with this diagram. The further we went, the more excited I became. The 4th movie is great. He’s a “motherfucker”. I hope I will be able to do it. It depends on the market situation. The 3rd is in the box, so it will come out anyway. I really hope that we will do the 4th and 5th, because in the end, it is one and the same big story.
Avatar 4 and 5 assigned to another director?
Will James Cameron, as for Alita: Battle Angel and Terminator: Dark Fate, entrust his vision and his creation to another director? It is a possibility, which the filmmaker assumes and which he details in the pages of the British magazine.
Movies “Avatar” are all-consuming, haunting productions. (…) I also have other projects in development, and they are exciting. I think that one day, when the time comes – I don’t know if it will be after the 3rd or the 4th – I’ll hand over to a director I trust to take over, so that I can do the other things that interest me.

Here is a hypothesis that may not please the filmmaker’s audience. Indeed, seeing the creator of an entire universe move away from his staging is not necessarily reassuring. James Cameron has already in the past directly entrusted with the realization of a project dear to his heart. It was about Alita: Battle Angelwhich he co-wrote and produced, but which was directed by Robert Rodriguez.
So, real planning problem for James Cameron? A weariness that is gaining ground after an adventure that began in 2009? A pressure shot addressed to the Disney studios which have not yet made enough progress on the Avatar 4 and 5 ? Case to follow.
