“Avatar : The Way of the Water” seems set to last at least three hours. While some might find the film too long and complain about it, James Cameron responds in advance to this kind of criticism.
Avatar 2 : James Cameron takes the plunge
Avatar 2 is maybe the most anticipated movie of 2022. This sequel has been expected for thirteen years, after a technically impressive first opus, which introduced the marvelous universe of Pandora. A universe imagined by james cameron which is well worth exploring. This will be the case with Avatar : The Way of the Water, which this time will take us to aquatic depths. The opportunity for the filmmaker to find an environment he likes, after in particular Abyss (1989) and Titanic (1998).

In the casting, we will find Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana back in their roles of Jake and Neytiri. Sigourney Weaver will also be present, but this time she will play a surprising character: a Na’vi teenager. On his side, Kate Winslet will be a formidable warrior. So there will be new characters to introduce, a whole new world and another clan, the Metkayina. Inevitably, with all this, Avatar 2 could have a long duration. Which, for James Cameron, shouldn’t be a problem.
Movies that are too long?
It must be said that currently blockbusters tend to be longer and longer, which can easily approach three hours. Even if this means fewer screenings per day, it does not seem to impact the box office figures (likeAvengers :Endgame). In an interview for Empire (via slashfilm), James Cameron spoke about the question of the duration of his film. The director is already anticipating some criticism on this subject, but, for him, these remarks are irrelevant given the audience’s ability to chain the hours of viewing with the serial format.
I don’t want to hear people complaining about how long they can sit and bingewatch for eight hours. I can already imagine what there will be in the review: “An excruciatingly long three-hour film…”. Honestly, leave me alone. I saw my children watch five hours of episodes in one go.

Taking the example of series episodes, James Cameron is not entirely wrong. It is true that today we are used to staying on our couch all day to watch an entire season. In itself, a film that is several hours long should therefore not be a problem if it manages to capture the viewer’s attention. Which, in fact, is not always the case. Some feature films sometimes stretch for no big deal. But this criticism can be applied just as much to a one and a half hour film. On the other hand, taking the serial format as an example is tricky given writing differences. Even if we can again find examples of programs that are too long for what they have to tell.
The toilet break at the cinema
Nevertheless, with a particularly long film that we would discover in the cinema, a problem may arise. To know the need for a bathroom break. Not everyone can hold back for three hours. And in the cinema, it is obviously unable to pause. James Cameron is aware of this and he allows us to get up for Avatar 2 to go to the toilet.
This is the great social paradigm shift that needs to take place: it’s not a problem to get up to go pee.
A rather amusing sentence but we understand the idea of the filmmaker. Of course, there is no miracle solution. We must therefore accept make certain concessions. And, for him, it is preferable that a handful of spectators misses a few minutes of the film rather than to shorten it. In any case, with this position, we can expect to whatAvatar 2 done within three hours. Its exact duration has not yet been communicated. We’ll find out by December 14, 2022release date of the film.
