It was almost obvious. Only four days after winning the Golden Lion at the 78th Venice Film Festival, Audrey Diwan’s film “L’Événement” has just been brought forward two months by its distributor Wild Bunch. It is therefore already positioned in the race for the Caesar, and why not, the Oscars.
The Event: the slap of the Venice Film Festival 2021
Presented in official competition at the 78th Venice Film Festival, the film The event directed by Audrey Diwan received the supreme award on September 11. Indeed, Bong Joon-ho and his jury awarded him the golden lion unanimously. A more than deserved reward for this shocking French film, which was our absolute favorite of this 78th Mostra.
The film is an adaptation of the eponymous autobiographical novel by Annie Ernaux. He is interested in the youth of the novelist (played in the film by Anamaria Vartolomei) who underwent a clandestine abortion in the early 1960s. A difficult subject, which Audrey Diwan wonderfully staged by placing the viewer in the shoes of the heroine of the film. The event is a real cinema experience, which one does not come out of unscathed.
The early release date
First scheduled for a release on February 2, 2022 in French theaters, The event will finally be released more than two months before. Indeed, after its triumph at the Mostra, the distributor Wild Bunch decided to advance it to the 24 november next.
This logical decision therefore puts him in the race for rewards for the ceremonies to come early next year. If we obviously think of the César (especially for that of the best hope and the best film), The event could also represent France at the next Oscars ceremony. If this were the case, it would have to find itself in particular in competition with Madres Paralelas by Pedro Almodovar, with whom he already shared the bill at the last Mostra.
This is all the harm we wish Audrey Diwan for this film that we should hear a lot about.
