Rian Johnson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt have shot many films together. The filmmaker’s favorite actor is even in the recent “À Couteaux Tirés”. Indeed, it appears the time of a short and discreet vocal cameo.
At loggerheads : or how to revisit Agatha Christie?
Barely out of the realization of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, filmmaker Rian Johnson decides to return to a more down-to-earth cinema with At loggerheads. Released in 2019, this cleverly staged police investigation is above all a choral film with an incredible cast. Indeed, in front of Rian Johnson’s camera, appear Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette and the late Christopher Plummer.
The purpose of To knives drawn is of revisiting the universe of Agatha Christie by telling a complex and entertaining detective story. Producer Ram Bergman, who has collaborated with Rian Johnson since his debut, knew that To knives drawn would be inspired by classic police officers to modernize them:
We start by saying to ourselves that we have already seen this kind of film, that we know how it works, but we get caught up in the game and we realize that we are fully invested in the characters. The film then becomes much deeper and much more ambitious than what we thought to expect.
Finally, To knives drawn turned out to be a huge achievement with an Oscar nomination and over $ 311 million in box office revenue (for a budget of 40 million). Faced with this triumph, Netflix has decided to invest more than $ 400 million to recover the rights to operate the franchise. Currently, Rian Johnson is filming Knives Out 2 with in particular, in addition to the return of Daniel Craig, a cast made up of Janelle Monae, Dave Bautista, Edward Norton, Kate Hudson or Ethan Hawke.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ultra-discreet cameo
The comedian Joseph Gordon-Levitt and director Rian Johnson are friends since the dawn of time. So much so that the filmmaker does not miss an opportunity to make turn his favorite actor in his productions. Often times, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is the main actor in Rian Johnson’s productions, as shown by Brig and especially the incredible Looper. Sometimes it’s a more low-key appearance, as is the case in An almost perfect scam where Joseph Gordon-Levitt does a short appearance in the skin of a bartender. In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the actor does a simple vocal appearance. Well, At loggerheads is no exception to the rule. Indeed, Joseph Gordon-Levitt is well in the film, the time of a very short appearance, also vocal.

Rian Johnson has indeed revealed that his fetish actor doubles down on a cop in the series Marta’s sister watches (Ana de Armas). Thus, Joseph Gordon-Levitt once again lends his voice for a totally unexpected and difficult to detect cameo. It was Rian Johnson himself who had revealed the easter-egg at the time of his film’s release:
It is a voice that we hear towards the beginning. When Marta’s sister watches a police show on her iPad, he’s the one we hear. When he says “We have the footage from the surveillance camera.” It’s him, it’s Joe.
