Guillaume Canet has completed the shooting of “Asterix and Obelix: the Middle Empire” in which he plays the little Gaul alongside Gilles Lellouche (Obélix). Much awaited by the public, the film now has a French release date.
Guillaume Canet makes his Asterix
After being adapted four times on the big screen (Asterix and Obelix against Caesar (1999), Asterix and Obelix Mission Cleopatra (2002), Asterix and Obelix at the Olympic Games (2008) and Asterix and Obelix in the Service of his Majesty (2012), our two favorite Gauls will be back soon. Indeed, Guillaume Canet has the heavy task of bringing them back to the forefront in Asterix and Obelix: the Middle Kingdom.
This new adventure with a comfortable budget of 60 million euros is not based on an existing story. Indeed, it is a original screenplay written by Philippe Mechelen and Julien Hervé. Regarding the plot, Guillaume Canet had revealed some snippets in JDD :
A cart arrives in the Gallic village with the Chinese princess Fu Yi who came to ask for help after the coup d’etat of a certain Deng Tsin Qin, who overthrew the empress. The reputation of the irreducible Gauls is known as far as Shanghai. Asterix, already a little vegan, will remonstrate with Obelix on his consumption of wild boars. Both will also discover the feeling of love. The place of women is also more important.
As in the previous sections, the cast is awesome. Thus, we find, among others, Guillaume Canet (Asterix), Gilles Lellouche (Obélix), Vincent Cassel (César), Marion Cotillard (Cléopâtre).
A release date revealed
The film, so the shooting ended in last august, is currently in post-production. Guillaume Canet had posted a video on his Instagram account for the end of the shooting:
And good news: Asterix and Obelix the Middle Kingdom now has a French release date. But we will have to be patient. Indeed, the film will be released in theaters on February 1, 2023.
Between Braveheart and Chabat?
With a budget of 60 million euros, Guillaume Canet has the right to be ambitious in his visual choices. But he also aims high with regard to the your comic of the movie. He told the JDD:
I know that we can do something crazy and that we see little in France: a real great adventure film, epic, with sumptuous sets and costumes (…) The idea is to make people laugh. children and parents alike by returning to a quirky humor on Chabat while having a very strong visual ambition, magical, Braveheart genre that meets Tiger and Dragon! I am a big fan of Chinese cinema and its crazy fights, with the characters that fly. We are going to confront the kung fu and the brute force of our Gallic heroes.
