“Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Empire”, the next live film based on the work of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo, and directed by Guillaume Canet, is unveiled with a new teaser.
Direction China for Asterix and Obelix
For his next film, Guillaume Canet decided to be more ambitious than ever. After Him (2021), shot in just four weeks in 2020, with less than a dozen performers in it, the actor and director was able to tackle a monument to comics with Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdom. Before him, the work of René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo had the right to several live action adaptations. To start with Asterix and Obelix versus Caesar (1999) before Alain Chabat offers the memorable Asterix and Obelix: Mission Cleopatra (2002). Afterwards, Asterix at the Olympics (2008) andAsterix and Obelix: At Her Majesty’s Service (2012) received much less unanimous support despite their significant costs.

Ten years after the last filmGuillaume Canet will therefore have a little pressure with The middle Empire. Especially since this time it’s aboutan original storyand not an adaptation of an album byAsterix and Obelix. The director has thus imagined an adventure on the side of China. Following a coup d’etat, the Chinese Empress is imprisoned. His daughter then goes to Gaul to ask Asterix and Obelix for help. Only, at the same time, Caesar would also see himself at the head of this country and decided to go there with his army.
The new pictures of The middle Empire
Until now, Obélix had always been played on screen by Gérard Depardieu. But for The middle Empire Guillaume Canet has decided to dispense with his services to offer this role to Gilles Lellouche. Concerning Asterix, the director took on the role of playing the little Gaul, after Christian Clavier, Clovis Cornillac and Édouard Baer. We were therefore able to discover what the duo was going to give thanks to a first trailer unveiled last September. But while the film won’t be released until next February, a new teaser has been uploaded by Pathe (video in one article).
We understand the tone of the film a little better, with references from our time, such as the gesture of rapper Jul made by Julius Caesar at the start of the trailer. And personalities in their usual style, like Jonathan Cohen coasting and Zlatan Ibrahimović to provide the action.
We can discover Asterix and Obelix: The Middle Kingdomand his countless guests (including Zlatan Ibrahimović) from February 1, 2023 in theaters.
