“Around the world in 80 days”, the new international co-production of France Télévisions, is revealed in a first trailer, just a few days before its preview at the Cannes series.
David Tennant’s ambitious new series, Around the World in 80 Days, is finally revealed in a first trailer. This production of the Alliance, a conglomerate of three European channels (ZDF, RAI and France Télévisions), whose shooting had to be interrupted after only 3 weeks of shooting in March 2020, will be presented in preview at the Canneséries festival. next October 10.
To take on the role of Phileas Fogg in this new adaptation of the famous Jules Vernes novel, it is therefore David Tennant, known for having played the tenth doctor in Dr Who and for having played in Broadchurch, who was chosen.
For the occasion, he will give a reply to the French Ibrahim Koma (Maman a wrong, La Cité rose), who will play Passepartout, as well as to Leonie Benesch (seen in season 3 of The Crown) who will be Abigail Fix, a young journalist who embarks with them through this disproportionate journey.
Ashley Pharoah, creator of Life On Mars and screenwriter on Around the World in 80 Days, explained that the series showed us a new side of the character of Phileas Fogg: “We wanted Fogg to be an over-educated upper middle class Englishman, but I also wanted to give him a kind of childish sense of wonder because he never traveled, he never left London.
He goes to Paris, India, Hong Kong and Yemen and he is so excited to see a camel and experience different cultures. I felt like redefining our relationship to travel seeing the world through his eyes. “
David Tennant was the perfect candidate for this ambitious role according to Simon Crawford Collins, creator of the series: “We wanted someone who was able to credibly play action and adventure scenes, but also be able to play an English tongue-in-cheek, while still being a character we appreciate. David does it so brilliantly. ”
The result of a co-production between France, Italy, Germany, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Australia and Belgium, Le Tour du Monde en 80 jours is produced by Slim Film + Television and Federation Entertainment, a French company already at the origin of the Bureau des Légendes, in partnership with Peu Communications in South Africa, Masterpiece PBS in the United States, Seven West Media in Australia, Be-FILMS and RTBF in Belgium and Daro Films.
Around the world in 80 days should be broadcast soon on France 2.
