After “The Mask of Zorro” and “The Legend of Zorro”, Antonio Banderas would be up for a third film, but on condition of passing the baton to another actor. And if he could choose, he’d take Tom Holland, who he worked with on “Uncharted”.
Zorro, from Guy Williams to Antonio Banderas
For a long time, the character of Zorro was associated with a face, that of actor Guy Williams who played him in the series that made him famous, between 1957 and 1961. Many other actors had worn the role before him. But the show produced by Disney studios will have made an impression with several television broadcasts years later. Decades later, the masked hero has returned to service this time thanks to Antonio Banderas and Anthony Hopkins in The Mask of Zorro (1998).
The film, directed by Martin Campbell, opens with Zorro played by Hopkins. But after being unmasked by the governor of Mexico City, Don Rafael Montero, Don Diego de la Vega is taken prisoner. Twenty years later, he manages to escape and plots his revenge. However, now too old to fight, he decides to pass the torch to a fiery youngsterAlejandro Murrieta, played by Antonio Banderas.

With this duo, accompanied by Catherine Zeta-Jones in the role of Elena de la Vega, the character of Zorro once again touched the general public. With its $65 million budget, the film grossed over $250 million. Which gave rise to a sequel, The Legend of Zorro (2005)still directed by Martin Campbell.
A new mask for Tom Holland?
While Hollywood continues to relaunch old franchises, a reboot of Zorro could very well be considered. If for the moment nothing concrete has been announced on this subject, Antonio Banderas has nevertheless been questioned by comic book (via Deadline) on his willingness or not to participate in a third film. The actor obviously kept the door open, telling himself ready to “consider this possibility“. But the most interesting thing is that, for him, his wish would be to pass the baton to another actor, similarly to Anthony Hopkins with him on the first film. And the new Zorro would be found for him: Tom Holland.
I did Uncharted with him. He’s so energetic and fun, and he’s got that little spark in him too.
A foot call that makes sense given Tom Holland’s coast. Especially since the interpreter of Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe used to wearing a mask. Again, this is just an Antonio Banderas idea with nothing concrete. Other projects around the character are in preparation, including a series for Disney + worn by Wilmer Valderrama. Also, a French series of France Televisions would be in production, with Jean Dujardin to embody the hero.
