In the original ending of “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, we see the titular character, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, grow a third eye in pain. It’s the price he pays for using the Darkhold to possess a corpse. We’ll see what that’s for in the future Doctor Strange means. It at least tells us that there is now a piece of darkness in him.
But like, among other things IGN reports, according to Michael Waldron, there was originally another plan: The ending should be a thoroughly evil one Doctor Strange reveal.
As is well known, the Marvel hero visits a parallel universe during the film, which was destroyed by an incursion. Here he fights Sinister Strange, an evil version of himself with a third eye.
According to Waldron was it the plan that the real stranger remain trapped in this incursion universe. In the end you should Doctor Strange see in the main MCU. But when he turned around, a third eye would have revealed itself – and not a new one that was painfully growing, but a wide existing one.
It would have been the revelation that Sinister Strange had traded places with the good Strange and is now up to mischief in the main universe proper. In order to clarify this twist, the plan was to underlay the scene with the iconic evil laugh of acting legend Vincent Price from Michael Jackson’s music video “Thriller”.
Instead of this bleak ending that would have implied that Doctor Strange or Sinister Strange is now a danger for the entire MCU, we instead got a finale that looks more towards new adventures for the hero. Because finally, in the post-credits scene, Charlize Theron appears as the heroine Clea, um Doctor Strange take away This arguably fits better with Marvel’s grand plan, as we suspect this end credits scene is already a hint to the next MCU mega event:
