The plot of the book is briefly as follows: On a quiet October evening in 1830, the dead body of a cadet student is found dangling from a rope at West Point Academy. The next morning, even more terrifying events come to light. Someone took out the dead man’s heart. The detective Augustus Landor, who was famous in New York at the time, is called to investigate.
