Three years after the release of “Alita: Battle Angel” directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, an announcement regarding the sequel was made by co-producer Jon Landau at the world premiere of “Avatar 2”.
Alita: the film adaptation of Gunnm
In February 2019, spectators around the world discover the film Alita: Battle Angel directed by Robert Rodriguez. This is the live action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s Gunnm manga.
The plot takes place in a dystopian universe. In the town of Iron City, a doctor named Ido discovers a damaged cyborg in a landfill and decides to take care of her. Back on her feet, Alita takes her marks in her new life but only remembers bits and pieces of her past. It is by confronting dangerous forces that she discovers the key to her identity and her unique combat abilities. She also becomes aware of the reality of the world she lives in and what she could achieve.

Produced by James Cameron, the film notably featured Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz and Jennifer Connelly. The feature film notably allowed James Cameron to test a new technology before starting the shooting ofAvatar 2.
Finally some good news for the future!
With a colossal budget estimated at $170 million, Alita: Battle Angel raised 405 million in worldwide box office (including 319 million internationally). A sum very far from satisfactory for Fox to decide to start a sequel, especially since the studio has been bought by Disney one month after release. However, producers James Cameron and Jon Landau have always wanted a second film to see the light of day. A strong fanbase also gave voice to demand the continuation of Alita’s adventures. And things may finally be moving forward.
It was during the world premiere ofAvatar : the way of the water that Jon Landau confided that they had contacted Robert Rodriguez to discuss Alita 2. The journalist’s question was about James Cameron’s next projects outside Avatar :
There’s this little movie called Alita Battle Angel that we’d like to follow up on. We are in contact with Robert Rodriguez and we hope to be able to start the project.
We cross fingers !
