Recently interviewed by Quebec host Julie Snyder, Claudette and Michel Dion, Celine Dion’s sister and brother gave their opinion on the film “Aline” by Valérie Lemercier. And that’s not really good news for the director.
Aline: Valérie Lemercier pays tribute to Celine Dion
Released on November 10 in French theaters, Aline by Valérie Lemercier staged the latter in the skin of Celine Dion (including for the childhood scenes). If it is a free adaptation, the film does indeed relate the key moments in the singer’s personal and professional life. Thus, the feature film returns in particular to the great love story between Céline Dion and René Angelil. It also gives pride of place to the Dion family (God in the film), and in particular the singer’s mother.
It does not work with the Dion family
Aline It is already enjoying great success on French soil, where it has already accumulated nearly a million admissions. The film is due out this Friday on Quebec screens, Celine Dion’s nation. It was on this occasion that Claudette and Michel, Celine Dion siblings, were interviewed by Julie Snyder in the show The week of 4 Julie this tuesday 23 november. And they were very disappointed with the film and the way in which Valérie Lemercier took hold of their family history.
“I don’t recognize my family”
Indeed, as reported in the article by Press, Claudette Dion took the floor to say that she had not recognized her family history in Aline :
It was not, unfortunately, for me, a great success. I was sorry. Maybe mum’s mourning is not over, I apologize. My mother never spoke like that to René, and Céline never wanted for anything (…) We look like a bunch of buggers. I know their story, the cabin in Canada. I’m sorry, but in Charlemagne, we didn’t have a cabin, and the house was always clean. We always said that we have never known misery because mom knew how to do everything, and dad had three jobs. I don’t recognize the language, I don’t recognize my family, I don’t recognize our roots.
On the very existence of the film, Claudette Dion overwhelms Valérie Lemercier:
She bought herself a trip, a nasty trip on the back of Celine’s life. I collapse. That’s not it, it never was.
For his part, Michel Dion, who was also the manager of Celine Dion for 30 years, noted a lack of rigor in the scenario. Especially on the song It was only a dream, which he never composed.
Valérie Lemercier cancels the interview with Julie Snyder
After these negative comments about the film, Valérie Lemercier canceled her participation in Julie Snyder’s show. The latter was disappointed, always according to Press :
I find it unfortunate that the very legitimate freedom of expression of Claudette and Michel Dion has irritated someone who claims to respect Celine Dion and her family. Basically, Ms. Lemercier is canceling her presence on our show because members of the Dion family have spoken, for the very first time, on her film. All of Quebec, France and the Francophonie were eager to know what members of the Dion family think of a film pasticating the life of their sister and theirs.
Everyone is now waiting for Celine Dion’s opinion.
