WILL SMITH. The fallout from the incident between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 2022 Academy Awards is endless. Remained silent so far, the comedian slapped by Will Smith has finally spoken. Check out his reaction.
[Mis à jour le 31 mars 2022 à 9h35] This year, Oscar night couldn’t focus on celebrating the winners. The reason? Will Smith slapped comedian Chris Rock on stage live after an inappropriate joke about his wife Jada Pinkett-Smith. Since then, the American press has gone from revelation to revelation about the course of this rather special evening. We thus learned on March 30 in a press release from the Academy of Oscars that it had asked Will Smith to withdraw from the ceremony after having shown violence within the Dolby Theater. Smith, nominated (then crowned a few minutes later) for the Oscar for best actor for the film The Williams Method, then refused. At the moment, the Academy of Oscars is considering an appropriate action plan after these unprecedented facts during the ceremony.
Chris Rock reacts to Will Smith’s slap
Chris Rock, meanwhile, had been silent since the evening of March 27. While back on stage in Boston to perform his stand-up show on the evening of March 30, the comedian spoke out for the first time about the slap he received from Will Smith. “So how was your weekend?” he asked, ironically, to the already hilarious audience.
The audio recording of the footage was made public by Variety. “I don’t have a lot to say about what happened,” he then tempered. “So if you guys came to hear this, I’ve got a whole show I wrote before this weekend! I’m still digesting what happened. So at some point, I’ll be talking about this stuff. And it will be serious and funny.” A reaction to warning the audience that he was therefore not going to talk about the event of the weekend but that he would probably do so later. Note that part of the public won over to his cause, then chanted insults against Will Smith.
Will Smith’s Apology
If Chris Rock has decided not to file a complaint against the Oscar-winning actor for the moment, the Academy has publicly condemned the gesture before opening an internal investigation. For his part, Will Smith publicly apologized on Instagram, deeming his behavior “unacceptable and inexcusable”. “What I did was wrong and I was wrong […] Violence has no place in a world of love and kindness.” The two stars would not have spoken to each other since the famous slap.
They would therefore not have made peace yet. TMZ, Chris Rock would have even avoided the Oscar-winning actor during the evening following the ceremony. The American tabloid would have questioned a friend of the comedian, who affirms that the latter had not been aware of the disease from which Jada Pinkett Smith suffered. For his part, Sean “Diddy” Combs allegedly told Page Six that the incident” is no longer a problem. It’s over […] They are brothers“, before specifying that he had spoken with each of the interested parties separately.
Jada Pinkett Smith comes out of the silence
The principal concerned by the humorist’s bad taste joke about her shaved head, Jada Pinkett Smith, came out silent on her Instagram account hours after her husband publicly apologized. Will Smith’s wife, however, did not take a position on the controversy, simply writing: “It’s a season about healing. And I’m going to enjoy it”. She will say no more about the case. As a reminder, Jada Pinkett Smith suffers from alopecia, a disease that causes hair loss.
If Will Smith hit Chris Rock at the 2022 Oscars, it was above all because of a bad joke from the master of ceremonies. The comedian, who came to introduce the Oscar for best documentary, had made a joke about the wife of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and about her baldness due to disease, alopecia. He notably compared her to Demi Moore, bald in the film On equal terms. Will Smith didn’t like the joke at all, as he stood up and punched Chris Rock in the face, before yelling, “Leave my wife’s name out of your f***ing mouth!”
This isn’t the first time Chris Rock has poked fun at Jada Pinkett Smith at the Oscars. He notably poked fun at the actress and Will Smith in 2016, when he hosted the 88th awards night.
