The next “Star Trek” series after “Picard” is called “Strange New Worlds” and is a prequel to “Starship Enterprise”. There was already the first trailer, but the new one offers significantly more action for the crew around Captain Pike, Spock, Una, and Co.
“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” connects the origins of the “Star Trek” universe with its present. Because the upcoming sci-fi series is set before the original series from the 1960s (known in this country as “Spaceship Enterprise”), but at the same time it is a spin-off of the modern “Star Trek: Discovery”, where the main characters around Captain Pike have already been introduced.
So far there has been a rather quiet trailer (see below), which was very reserved with action scenes, as well as some smaller teasers for the individual characters in the series. The above trailer now puts a different focus. Here, the prequel series presents itself as a state-of-the-art sci-fi spectacle, with a lot of banging and banging at times.
Over half a century has passed since the original series. It’s only logical that the iconic Enterprise backdrops from back then have now been replaced by contemporary alternatives and that CGI effects are also used extensively in the new series. The look of the prequel is therefore light years away from its spiritual model. Still, the iconic starship, Starfleet uniforms, Spock’s pointy ears, and the ship’s original beeps all add up to Enterprise nostalgia.
The next “Star Trek” series after “Picard”: Is “Strange New Worlds”
Strange New Worlds takes place a few years before the events of Starship Enterprise.. At that time, the legendary spaceship was not yet commanded by James T. Kirk (he will, however, appear in the series from season 2), but by his direct predecessor, Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount). Pike was the protagonist of the original Star Trek pilot but was then replaced by Kirk. However, the character later appeared several times in the iconic sci-fi universe, played by different actors.
Due to the close proximity to the original series, well-known crew members are already on board the Enterprise, such as Mr. Spock (Ethan Peck) and Uhura (Celia Rose Gooding). X-Men star Rebecca Romijn will also reprise her role as Una, aka Number 1, from Star Trek: Discovery.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be released in the US on May 5, 2022, exclusively on Paramount+. In Germany, too, the series will probably end up on the streaming service. In Germany, Paramount+ should be launched in the second half of 2022 and will then be available both individually and via various Sky packages.
