The acclaimed first season of True Detective took the TV world by storm. After two more seasons, the future of the anthology series was uncertain for a long time. But now a new team is working on Season 4.

With an abysmal crime story, the atmosphere thick enough to cut, and the grandiose duo of leading actors Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, the award-winning first season of “True Detective” was one of THE series highlights of the past decade for us too. on IMDB the dark anthology series still ranks 32nd among the best-rated series of all time – even though the second season (with Colin Farrell, among others) only received mixed reviews and the much more positively received third season (with Mahershala Ali, among others) from far away was looked at by fewer people.
For a long time, it was questionable whether there would be more “True Detective”, after all, season 3 is now more than three years old. But since there were already three and a half years between Seasons 2 and 3, there was still hope. And after the US broadcaster HBO already hinted in 2021 that negotiations about a sequel were underway, it is now actually certain:
The fourth season of True Detective, to be subtitled Night Country is in development. The US trade journals report unanimously.
The new team behind the scenes
However, “True Detective” fans have to be prepared for a big change, which could also provide a good breath of fresh air: “True Detective: Night Country” is no longer penned by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, who was still responsible for the first was responsible for three seasons. His successor is the Mexican Issa López (“Vuelven”, “Todo Mal”), who will not only contribute to the screenplay but will also direct at least the first episode. The new product is the Oscar-winning “Moonlight” creator by Barry Jenkins.
Pizzolatto, meanwhile, is expected to still get an executive producer credit, along with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson, although he will no longer be involved in the series’ creative process.
It is not yet known what the fourth season of “True Detective” will be about and who will play the main roles this time. Each season of the anthology format tells its own self-contained crime story with different characters in focus.
It is also unclear when “True Detective: Night Country” will start. Since the project is still in an early stage of development, it could perhaps be something for the tenth anniversary of series production in 2024. Until then, you can watch the first three seasons of the exceptional series again, all of which are available on Sky Ticket, for example.
